Horseback Ridings a Go!

A few weeks ago I blogged about the possibility of offseason horseback riding being approved for our beach

(Off Season horse riding on the beach). This past week the Ocean City Council approved this for the off season.

Seasonal permits will be available for $50, they are discussing day pass options. Starting this fall, riding will be allowed from 27th street south to the Inlet from 6 am - 5 pm. Riders are only able to participate in leisure riding, no competitions or matches will be allowed. Permit holders will be held responsible for cleaning up after their horse, this includes manure and any other debris associated with the horses.

Currently the town plans to try this for a year, and see how it goes. There is still a lot of skepticism regarding riders cleaning up after themselves. Horse manure contains germs, not only is it unslightly but it can make our beaches dangerous to tourists. Obviously the town's first concern is the safety of our tourists and beauty of our beach. I guess we'll just have to see how it goes!

Groundhog Day 2012

I've always been somewhat captivated by Groundhog Day. I've never been quite sure why, perhaps it's because I'm always wishing for summer, or my love for Bill Murray... but most likely it's due to the absurdity that Americans look to a rodent (who lives a very comfortable life in a zoo) to predict the weather. No matter the reasoning, I still pay attention every February 2nd to Phil and Chuck's forecast.

In typical fashion, Phil and Chuck disagree. And although we haven't had much of a winter, Phil says we are going to have 6 more weeks of it. I think this year I'll put my money on Chuck, lets skip winter all together and go straight into Spring! What do you think?

Typically February is our coldest and slowest month here at the beach. It seems as though everyone is either in hibernation or on vacation abroad (jealous!). It's most defiantly pretty slow here... but cold, not so much! It's been an unseasonally warm winter... I'm talking 68 degrees on February 1st! People were out strolling the boards, bikers were abundant, pups were swimming in the Atlantic. Yesterday simply was an absolute fantastic day at the beach! It's only February, but I now have a serious case of Spring Fever! I know it isn't normal and most likely a sign of global changes, but I'd be fine if it stays this nice all winter long.

Off Season Horse Riding on the Beach

Last week the town proposed a new ordinance that would allow people to ride horses on the beach from November 1 - March 30. Riders would need a seasonal permit, which would cost $50 per horse and would be allowed on the beach from 6 am - 7 pm.

Personally, I am somewhat torn by the idea. I think it's a great idea for tourism, and could help promote some of our local stables. Our surrounding area has a rich history in horses, being one of the centers for American thoroughbred racing. Many champion horses were raised and trained here, including Man O' War. Plus, knowing the success of Assateague Island, where people can visit the wild ponies, there is clearly a interest in horses at the beach.

I can really only see two drawbacks to this. One, how would they handle waste? Currently there is a $500 fine for anyone who doesn't pick up pet waste, but this may prove slightly more difficult while riding a horse verse walking a dog. As a huge supporter for the MD Coastal Bays Program, picking up pet waste is a major concern for the health of our waterways. Pet waste encourage bacterial growth in our water, leading to health concerns and can kill marine life. (Check out Shore Bread's Article - Don't be a Poop-A-Traitor for more info). Although I am no expert, I simply can't image Horse waste to be any better for our waterways... it also happens to be on a larger scale....

Finally, the second draw back would be how this would affect winter beach goers and dog owners. Currently, during these same months we are able to let our dogs out on the beach, leashed of course. As long as owners keep dogs leashed, and horse riders can properly control their horses I'm sure there wouldn't be an issue. But you never know, there is always a few bad apples in every bunch. I'd hate to see an animal or person get hurt in the mix.

If these two things could be controlled, I say give horses the green light! It could be a great draw to the area during our off season.

India's Multi-Purpose Reef

I came across an amazing article today about a new 'multi-purpose' reef that was recently installed off the West Coast of India. Although the construction occurred quite sometime ago, this is the first I've heard of it. I plan to do a little more research to see the total effects and other projects - look forward to another blog on this soon.

The reef was constructed by the company ASR. ASR is dedicated to finding solutions to preserve the environment from existing nature. One of ASR's projects is building man-made reefs to attempt to control coastal erosion. By using the waters own energy, the reef slows erosion by pushing the wave further offshore. The reef not only benefits the environment in a more cost efficient way, but it turns out it's providing some amazing surf. Perhaps it could have a positive impact in the local economy, surf tourism could be in their near future!

New Jetty Tower

This morning the United States Coast Guard gave Ocean City a new temporary tower for our inlet's jetty. Our previous light tower and fog horn was swept away by Hurricane Irene's swell in late August.

Our new tower comes from Portsmouth, VA and was flown in by helicopter. This tower will only be a temporary fix, Ocean City has plans to build a permanent tower that can better withstand Hurricane winds and tides. The old tower, which lies nearby in the surf will be taken apart by divers - piece by piece. Although there has been no reports of the tower, for boater and surfer safety it will be removed.

Penguin Swim 2012

Every New Year's Day our local hospital, Atlantic General hosts their annual Penguin Swim. This year they couldn't have asked for better weather or turn out. New Year's Day was a beautiful sunny 60 degrees. Almost 1,000 people came out to jump in the Atlantic to celebrate the 2012.

Check out their amazing photos on Flickr. This year they had some awesome costumes. Superman, Angry Birds and the green men showed up for the big event. Participants all got some great warm hats, including some super cute penguin hats!

Berlin New Year's Ball Drop

Berlin will be celebrating the New Year with a street party and Ball drop. This will be Berlin's 2nd annual New Year's celebration. Last year was a great time, I'm excited to see how this year turns out. The town will allow people to walk around main street with drinks, the local bars will set up stands around the area. This year the town will even have food vendors to accommodate the masses. If you arrive a bit early, free carriage rides through the town will be available.

I'll let you know how it went in the New Year!

Smith Island Cakes

It's time we all become a little more familiar Maryland's official state desert, the Smith Island Cake. Named after the island it hails from, Smith Island cakes are thinly layered cakes with fudge icing between each layer. A typical cake can have anywhere from 6 - 15 slender layers. Smith Island is a small island located in the Chesapeake Bay, around 12 miles off the shore of Crisfield. The island was settled in the 1600's, and has always been home to watermen whose livelihood depended on the bay. Today, roughly 400 people live there, many can trace their lineage to the original settlers.

No one knows for sure where the Smith Island Cake comes from, some believe was brought over with the first settlers. Due to the layers the cake stays very moist, keeping it fresh much longer than most cakes. This has always been a useful aspect for the watermen of Smith Island, who could be gone for long periods without refrigeration.

A real Smith Island cake, from Smith Island is quite amazing... nothing can compare. Unfortunately, Smith Island isn't the easiest place to visit, it's only accessible by boat. I'm not sure of their secret, but I do know that each layer must be cooked individually.... don't try to slice a large cake, it will never be the same. If you have a large amount of time on your hands, it's worth a try... if not your in luck! A few years back a local company started a small cake shop in West Ocean City, the Original Smith Island Cake Company. Their cakes are delicious and come close to a cake from the island. Their real treat is their specialty flavors. I'm a huge fan of their Chocolate Mint and Pumpkin cakes. They offer different sizes, in case you just need a little treat. They also offer cupcakes, cake pops and a new delight 'cake its'. I can't seem to get enough of these little balls of goodness. Cake its are basically cake and frosting, dipped in chocolate.... mmmm mmmm good! In case Ocean City is a bit too far of a drive for you, you can always order online and the company will also ship your goodies to your door!

Ho Ho Ho Santa Con Success!

The first ever Santa Con in Ocean City was a success! Over 50 Santa's met up at the Ocean City Inlet 'dead' shark and proceeded to carol their way down the boardwalk and through downtown. To the festive cry of "Welcome Santa" the Santa's multiplied as we made our merry through the town. I'd estimate we had closer to 100 Christmas spirited people joining in the festivities.

Our joyous group hit all of Wicomico Street (Cork Bar, Clam and Pour House) then marched off to the Bloody Bucket for more jollity than they've seen in years! Up next was the Lazy Lizard, Pickles and the Tavern. In addition to a bunch of Santas, we had elves, reindeer, Mrs. Claus, Christmas Trees, naughty Mrs. Claus and my favorite was the bunch from 'A Christmas Story.' The threesome sported a fragilé box, leg lamp dress and pink Easter Bunny Ralphie! Buddy the Elf even made a 'few' appearances. The only one missing was the Grinch!

Santa Con Coming to Ocean City!

This Saturday, for the first time, Santa Con will invade Ocean City and parade all through town..... or rather the downtown boardwalk area.

If you are unfamiliar with Santa Con, it's basically an 'organized' gathering of people dressed like Santa Claus, or Mrs. Claus... or anything to do with Christmas. I'm sure a few elves and maybe a Reindeer will be thrown in this weekend. Santa Con will be occurring in 228 locations this year, spreading out into 32 countries. Santas will carol along the boardwalk, taking pictures in front of various Ocean City monuments. There's no real schedule, but the Santa's last stop is to be Peppers Tavern on 16th and the boards. I'm sure the Clam, Pour House, Pickles and a bunch of other locations!

So throw on your best Santa costume at head to the inlet, Santa's are meeting at 3 pm at the Dead Shark aka next to the OC Life Saving Museum. See you Saturday Santas!

The Cutest Uninvited House Guest

Not sure if you've heard about this little guy yet, but it seems there's a lost baby seal pup wandering New Zealand! He looks a bit like Ocean City's Hastings ( Release of Hastings the Seal)

Apparently, the seal came from a nearby island, Montaunua. The island is a breeding ground for fur seals, located about 7 miles off shore. Earlier that day the seal was seen wandering through the town, apparently he'd scared a few elderly people. He then continued on, crossing a road, driveway and into someone's home via their cat door. As if that wasn't enough he then climbed the steps and took a nice nap on their comfy sofa (I don't blame him, I bet he was tired!). No surprise, the baby seal's been nicknamed Lucky, since he was incredibly lucky to have survived is adventure.

Lucky's been released back into the sea, hopefully he'll find his other pups and stay out of trouble for a little while.

Welcome to the World Turtles

Back in August I posted about a Loggerhead Turtle who laid roughly 200 eggs just a few miles north of us, at the Cape Henlopen State Park in Delaware (Sea Turtles near our Beach). Scientists were hopefully that they would survive, but given our slightly colder northern weather and storms the odds weren't in the baby turtles favor. Against it all, 6 baby loggerhead turtles hatched last week! These little guys are amazing. They've made it through already so much.

In the early fall, the eggs were moved farther inland to escape harm from the encroaching tide. Then the eggs had to battle through two tropical storms and a very cold snap that came through our area. In early October scientists moved the eggs once more to a facility with incubators to protect them from the colder weather. Since October scientists have been hoping for the best, unsure of the final outcome. Typically, sea turtles take around 60 days to hatch (meaning they were expected in middle October, adding to many of the scientists worry). Yet, weeks later we now have 6 more turtles that have survived and will be released into the waters. Talk about survival against all odds!

This marks the first time an endangered sea turtle has laid eggs, and the first hatchlings in Delaware! The little guys are around the size of a sand dollar, but will grow to be over 400 pounds. The baby turtles will be taken to an aquarium in North Carolina where they can be assessed and released into the warmer waters of the Gulf Stream. The warm waters and current of the Gulf Stream will hopefully assist in their survival. The remaining eggs will also be taken to the aquarium, in hopes that they might also hatch in their own due time.

Winter Blues? Take a Trip!

I came across a neat article today 'RX for whatever ails you: take more trips' Given the article was posted by a travel organization, I'm sure the studies weren't bias. Apparently, taking more trips might lead to better health!

This isn't the first time I've heard of this - there are numerous studies which have a high correlation between health and vacation time (ie relaxation!). But this article brought up an interesting point, that our brains are constantly rebuilding like the rest of our body. Travel and new experiences provide our brains' with the stimulation it needs. Relaxing trips also provide our body with the time it needs to rest and restore.

Why not travel to Ocean City? I can't think of a better way to escape your winter blues! I know we're known for being a summer destination, but Ocean City's great in the winter too! The boardwalk and beach are open year round; take a nice stroll or bring a bike and enjoy a beautiful winter day. We've got plenty of cute stores in Ocean City such as Raggamuffin, South Moon Under and Quiet Storm. Nearby Berlin is filled with unique stores, antiques and art galleries. Stroll the old-timey streets and enjoy the sites. If you're more of an out doorsy person, Assateague Island is open year round. It offers some great nature trails for those on foot and bike. If it's too chilly outside for you, visit one of our 2 indoor mini golf locations or strap on a pair of skates and hit the ice at the Carousel.

We've got plenty to do in the winter, start the New Year off right - protect your health and come for a visit!

Eventful Benefiting Weekend

Last week I posted about the great events happening in Berlin, MD for their Victorian Christmas . The majority of events will continue this weekend. Click here for a full list of Berlin's Events

In addition to their Victorian fun, Baked Desserts Cafe and Gallery will be hosting a Holiday Open House & Food Drive this Saturday. From 10 am - 4 pm Baked Desserts will have dessert tastings, holiday greens for sale and their annual Food Drive for the Hungry. Bring in items, save 10% on your purchases all day.

Nearby Paws & Claws will be hosting a photo shoot with Santa on Sunday. All pets are welcome, owners can 'browse' for stocking stuffers for their four legged family members. The photo shoot and photo is just a $20 fee, and it includes a donation to our local Animal Shelter.

Last month, I blogged on about a local charity, Diakonia (Giving Back - Diakonia). This weekend there will be two events in town that will benefit the organization. A cookie walk on Saturday at the St. Peter's Church on 103rd street. The walk will be held from 9 am - 2 pm, and ALL proceeds from the cookie sale will be matched and go towards Diakonia! If you don't feel like baking this is a great way to get your Christmas Cookies!

Also on Saturday, the Restaurant at Lighthouse Sound will host a pancake breakfast with Santa! The breakfast will take place from 7 - 11 am. This event is a great day for any family, but also for the children of Diakonia (often it is their only Christmas Holiday event). The breakfast is very affordable, $10 for adults, $5 for children 5-10 years and 5 & under are free. Tickets can be purchased at Lighthouse Sound Restaurant or the 4 local Taylor Bank locations.

Victorian Christmas

Last night's Christmas Parade in Berlin was a success (like all years past!). The town was beautiful, homes and shops were lit up and festive. People crowded the streets, it was a great turn out.

For the next few weekends until Christmas, Berlin will be celebrating their Victorian Christmas.

Santa Claus will be at his house on Broad Street, between the Atlantic Hotel and the Globe on Saturdays and Sundays from 12 - 2 pm. Feel free to bring your camera to snap a few pics of your little ones with Santa.

Horse and Carriage Rides are available for free to provide a scenic ride through the historic town. Rides last around 15 minutes and depart from the Atlantic Hotel. Carriage rides will be available on Saturdays and Sundays from 12 - 4 pm.

After your ride checkout the Blacksmith at work in front of the Atlantic Hotel from 11 am - 3pm on weekends. The Atlantic Hotel is decorated with period furnishing, their seasonal decorations are no exception. Guests are invited to tour the open rooms throughout the month.

Right behind the Atlantic Hotel is the studio and gallery of Jeffery Auxer Designs. Stop by to check out beautiful glass blown pieces. On Saturday he'll offer short classes where you'll learn to make your very own glass blown ornament for just $15. Classes run from 11 am - 2 pm.

Be sure to stop by the Calvin B. Taylor House for a museum tour. The museum has displays of Berlin and Worcester County history and will be decorated for the season. Open houses are weekends from 1 - 4 pm.

While in town don't forget to support our local merchants. Berlin is not only rich in history, but it has some amazing artisans. Galleries will be open to the public each weekend, many having open houses and events. Stop by my favorite stores, Ta Da & Ta Da Home for refreshments and gourmet tastings. Ta Da offers beautiful coastal inspire home decor, jewelry, and gifts. During the month they'll be offering free gift wrapping. If your hunny needs a few ideas, fill out a Santa wishlist. Your wish will be brought to nearby Burley Oak on Fridays from 5 - 7 pm, your sweet is sure to find what you've been looking for there at happy hour! Make sure you try a cupcake at Ta Da, it may save you anywhere from 5 - 35%!

Just a few minutes from downtown Berlin is Worcester Prepatory School. On Sunday they will be hosting their annual Christmas Bazaar from 11 am - 4 pm. A wonderful selection of gifts, crafts, baked goods, greenery and books will be available. Santa and Mrs. Claus will also be present for pictures and tea.

December's Here and Christmas Parades

Happy December!

Can't believe we've made it to December, winter is really here! To celebrate, Berlin will be hosting their 41st Annual Christmas Parade tonight at 7 pm.

Berlin's Christmas Parade is easily my favorite event held in the small town. The town celebrated their Tree Lighting last week, on the 25th of November, launching itself into a month long celebration of Holiday Events; deemed Berlin's Victorian Christmas. Every weekend Santa will be in his 'house' welcoming visitors, plus Horse and Carriage Rides will be available to take you on a scenic tour of the town. All of Berlin's quaint merchants that line the street will have seasonal decor and holiday window displays (eat your heart out Macy's!)

The entire town will be lit up tonight. The Atlantic Hotel and The Globe will stay open late, enjoy an early meal then grab a cider or coco to keep you warm while you watch the parade (adults can add something special to theirs). I love that they host the parade at night, it helps to capture the twinkle of the lights and adds to the holiday magic. They are expecting over 130 different organizations to partake in the festivities tonight! Expect to see floats, marching bands, fire companies, local performers and even Santa Claus!

This Saturday, Ocean City will also host their annual Christmas Parade as well. The Parade starts at 11 am and will run from 100th st. to 115th st. Many of the same floats will be present. Ocean City's parade makes a great day time activity. I won't lie though, I'm partial to the Berlin Parade - it really helps you get into the Holiday Spirit!

Holiday's at the Sea Decorations

A few week's ago I posted on some Sea-Worthy Holiday decorations, a few I made last year and a few I plan to try my hand at this year. I've slacked a bit on my plans, but hopefully this weekend the tree will be up and decorations started.

Over the Thanksgiving Holiday I partook in small business Saturday, trying to help out the business that were in the area I was in. While in many of these stores I was inspired by a few of their Holiday decorations.

Sea Urchin Snowman

How cute is this little guy! All you need are 3 Sea Urchins, try and get them in different sizes. You can use a hot glue gun to stack them, large to small. The rest is up to your creativity! You can use a sharpie for the details, or try your hand at felt. Another cute idea would be to use pom-poms for the buttons and hat. Use a little ribbon or yarn to make his scarf. Then glue a ribbon on the top in a loop to make the ornament.

Sea Shell Angel

I just love this little angel, and she's super easy to make. Lucky for me, I'm close to the sea and can collect a bunch of shells, however most craft stores will carry a variety of shells. This one really lets you play with different types of shells, to see what fits best. Glue the wings to the body first, make sure the shell 'wings' are backwards. Then glue the shell 'head' in place. To cover any open areas, use small beading pearls and hot glue. Then attach a looped ribbon to the back to make your ornament. Add sparkles and paint if you'd like her to shine!

Bikefest Approved for 2012

Last year Ocean City hosted our first ever Bikefest at the Inlet. Previously, various local restaurants/bars have hosted events for the week, but this was our first only Ocean City event held at the Inlet. The weekend of attractions was held in conjunction with other area Bike rallies... needless to say there was much to do for all motorcycle fans. Unfortunately, last year mother nature had different ideas for the weekend, although most didn't let the wet weather dampen their plans.

Our 2nd annual Bikefest is planned for September 13 - 16. Ocean City expects up to 30,000 bike enthusiasts to grace the inlet next fall. This past September's Bikefest offered stunt shows, custom bike builders, retailers, live musical entertainment and food. Much of the same vendors are expected for next year, with the addition of a few more events and food options.

Oh My Hair for Diakonia

This past month I've put more of a focus on blogging about ways to give back, and give thanks. Earlier this month I blogged on some events for a local organization, Diakonia, which helps people in need in our community (Giving Back - Diakonia). Local hair salon, 'Oh My Hair' will be collecting donations and supplies until December 16th to provide to the guests of Diakonia. To help, you can purchase a 'beauty bag' for $11 which will provide women with shampoo, conditioner and hair spray. New toiletry items are also needed, such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap and deodorants. These items can be dropped off at Oh My Hair and will be placed in the bags for the women. If interested, please drop off your items by December 16th at Oh My Hair.

Thankful

It's just about here... Thanksgiving! I know I always seem to dread the change of seasons, especially winter... believe it or not, I love Thanksgiving and look forward to it every year. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday of the year, there's something magical about everyone in our country being able to celebrate the same day together; to reflect and give thanks for all that we have.

I also love Thanksgiving because the day itself hasn't been overly commercialized. I can't stand how Holiday's have become something that they are not, and were never intended to be (given it is sad that much of the religious aspect of Thanksgiving has been stripped from the Holiday; I suppose it's up to parents to ensure that side of the day). Unfortunately, the days surrounding Thanksgiving have gotten a little out of hand, stripping the focus of the day to upcoming sales and savings. Nevertheless, it's still my favorite holiday.

This year I am thankful for SO MUCH! It's been a great year. I feel incredibly blessed to have wonderful friends and family, my health and health of those around me. For all those abroad, risking their lives to keep us safe, a very big thank you! I'm sorry you can't be here this holiday to spend it with your loved ones. Thank you to Irene for sparing our little beach town. Thank you for a wonderful summer season that will get us through another winter. Thankful for work when so many are without. Thankful for allowing me to wake by the sea each day and breathe the crisp salty air.... I could go on and on. What are you thankful for?

Thanksgiving at the Beach - No Mess and No Stress

By now I'm sure many of you have plans for the upcoming Holiday, but if not why not celebrate Thanksgiving at the Beach? The majority of restaurants will be open, serving traditional Thanksgiving meals... think Turkey and all the fixin's! A bunch of local hotels are even offering specials for the weekend.

Although Thanksgiving is easily my favorite holiday, the hours of prep time, cooking and then cleaning up can be stressful and tiresome. Dining out for the day provides the added bonus of no mess and no stress! Plus, spending Thanksgiving at beach will give you ample time to relax and reflect on what you are thankful for. Looking for a new coffee table book? Or perhaps the perfect gift for your Ocean-City-Loving-Friends? Local man, Gregory Poulos has just released the book for you. 'Moments' is a collection of black and white photographs over the past 20 or so years.

The book is organized into a few different sections; boardwalk images, beach scenes, people. I especially enjoy some of the witty names associated with a few of the images, many providing social commentary on the subject matter. It's pretty interesting to see how Ocean City has changed... and stayed the same over the last few years. Most notably were the buildings, and many of the restaurant names that have changed names/hands.

Lighting Up OC

It's hard to believe it's already that time of year, especially when it was 70 degrees and sunny this week, but Winterfest of Lights opens tomorrow! This is Winterfest's 19th year lighting up the town, and boy are there alot of lights - over a million will start twinkling this week.

The 'Opening Night Celebration' will begin this Thursday at 5:30pm at Northside Park, where the majority of lights are displayed. The Opening Night is by far the most 'electrifying' nights to visit the park. The evening kicks off with holiday songs and dances performed by the OC Stars, our local elementary schools chorus. Following the show, Mayor Meehan and the children will 'throw the switch.' Imagine a completely dark park at night (except for the stage) .... and then it's just lights and lights and lights accompanied by sounds of awe from young and old alike. As I said, it's electrifying.

Winterfest's 50 ft. lighted tree

Opening night is free to all visitors. The park will stay open tomorrow until January 1st, so you'll have plenty of time to visit. Sunday - Thursday it'll be open from 5:30 - 9:30 pm, and from 5:30 - 10:30 pm on Friday and Saturday nights. Riding the Winterfest Train is just $5 for those over 12 years, and $3 for children.

Winterfest draws over 100,000 visitors each season, countless families make it an annual Holiday practice. The event was named 'Maryland's Finest Holiday Tradition' by Maryland Life Magazie and is an ABA Top 100 Destination. Each year Winterfest is a little different. This year Winterfest has a few new additions, but there's been no release as to what because they want their visitors to have fun spotting them!

Although not apart of the main park, my favorite Winterfest display is the Avenue of Trees. A large Winterfest marlin will be lighted on Thursday to greet all Ocean City visitors at the intersection of Rt. 50 and Philadelphia (there's also one at the North end of town). Once visitors pass the large display there will be lights on every corner and an Avenue of Trees. I just love driving through downtown while it's all lit up. Each corner displays a different Holiday Light; I adore the starfish, marlin and mermaid. There's also a free light display at the inlet that visitors can drive through.

America Recycles Day

If you haven't already heard, today is America Recycles Day. Since 1997, November 15 has been designated as the day to promote recycling in the United States. Clearly, recycling is not just a one day event; today serves as a day to promote, encourage and educate our communities on the importance of recycling, in hopes that recycling will become something that's 365 days a year.

Looking for a place to drop off your recycling? Earth911.com runs a fantastic site where you can search for recycling center's near you! Check out their site for how you can Reduce, Reuse and Recycle!

Until recently, Ocean City ran a fantastic recycling program. Sadly it has been discontinued, but this doesn't mean there isn't a way for us to Recycle. Here's a few ways you can help out, not only for today but throughout the year.

Gather all your plastic, paper, glass and metal and drop it off at our county's Recycling Drop off in Ocean Pines. They take a wide assortment of items, to find out more information visit earth911.com's site for them. The Berlin Walmart also has a huge drop off, which take most items.

Our local Humane Society collects aluminum cans, which they recycle and receive a profit that goes back to the shelter to take care of the animals. Pretty much all aluminum can be recycled here, this includes beer cans! I bet you didn't know the hungry kitties could benefit from your empty Natural Light Cans. Just be sure to place your items in the proper bin when dropping off, it's importance to keep our trash out of our ecosystem and away from the local wildlife.

Start using reusable shopping bags when on your errards, instead of accepting plastic or paper bags from the store. Unfortunately, many drop off sites have stopped taking plastic bags. Best to start avoiding them asap!

Old clothes or items? Instead of tossing to the dump, consider reusing them for a different purpose or donating to a local charity. Old clothes can be re-purposed as rags or pillow stuffing. You can even get crafty and 'reinvent' a new garment or try your hand at a new blanket. One of our local thrift stores, Used to Be Mine is always looking for donations. They will take clothing, furniture, and other goods. All donations at the store are used to help a local charity, Diakonia and are tax deductible. Not only does this find a new home for your old treasures, but it'll go towards helping those in need.

Many electronics need to be recycled in specially designated centers, due to their contents. Our local Staples will take old items for you, including printer cartridges. Often, for properly recycling these items they will reward you with store credit. In Ocean Pines, Worcester County Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Center will take these items and any dangerous chemicals. Living so near to the Ocean and our Coastal Bays, it's very important to properly dispose of chemical waste, these items have an extremely harmful effect on our environment.

From the Sea Holiday Tree

Out shopping this weekend I couldn't believe how many stores had Christmas decor and music out. Maybe I'm just a late-bird, but I like to get through with the Turkey before I get out the Tree. Last year I attempted to create a sea inspired tree, unfortunately I wasn't able to produce quite enough ornaments with just a little under 3 weeks. This year I've decided to get in the Merry Mood and begin a few of the Christmas projects early.

Last year, I worked on a bunch of glittered starfish and seashells. Pretty easy to make, and wound up looking beautiful on the tree. Making your own really give you the ability to match your homes or tree's color scheme. Last year I went with a more natural palette, with a little pink thrown in. I haven't decided what this year's color will be, but I'm thinking aqua and turquoise!

There's a bunch of different ways you can make these, depending on what your desired result is.

What you'll need:

Seashells and Starfish (I used the sugar starfish and larger pencil Starfish)

Hot Glue Gun

Ribbon, Cord or Twine

Spray Glitter

Paint (optional)

Glitter Paint

Glue - spray adhesive glue also works well

Loose Glitter

If you're looking to keep the starfish's natural look, the spray glitter works the best. This is basically like a spray paint, but instead glitter in an adhesive comes out. They come in a variety of colors. If you can't find the color you were looking for, painting the starfish your desired color then spraying the glitter once dried works well. Glitter paint also works well for this, skipping the spray glitter step.

If you're looking for a heavy glittered ornament (such as the image above), the best way is to coat the starfish in glue, and then sprinkle with loose glitter. Tap to remove excess and let dry.

For all of these, once dry add on your cord with a dot of hot glue, create a loop and glue again to the back of the ornament.

Movies, Bowling and Gambling?

An unlikely mix, but very exciting news for our small town. Worcester County Planning Commission approved preliminary ideas for a five screen movie theater and a 10 lane bowling alley to be developed next to the Casino at Ocean Downs.

I have been unsuccessful in finding additional information, besides the concept, but I think it's a pretty great idea. Our local theaters and our 1 bowling alley have seen better days, it would be great to have something new and perhaps more current with today's technical advances. The additions to the Casino would provide entertainment to all visiting Ocean Downs; some can gamble, others can watch a movie or bowl.

Initially, traffic was a huge concern with the creation of the Casino. I'm sure that it'll continue to be an issue with the building of a Bowling Alley and Movie Theater. Either way, it's still pretty exciting!

Giving Back - Diakonia

With the Holidays quickly approaching, this time of year always becomes one of reflection and giving thanks for all the blessings in my life. I'm always looking for ways to give back to others, especially those in my local community.

A few week's ago I had the chance to help a local charity, Diakonia. Diakonia was in need of volunteers to help prepare a small apartment for a new tenant of theirs. It was a wonderful experience, and opened my eyes to all that Diakonia does for the community. For more than 30 years Diakonia has been providing "Help for Today and Hope for Tomorrow." The organization helps individuals and families in our local area by providing housing and food for those in crisis, but more than that, Diakonia provides resources so people can change and improve their lives one step at a time.

Diakonia is run on just what is provided on state and federal levels. As you can imagine, this makes for an extremely tight budget, they are very dependent on funding and support from the local community. It really is wonderful charity, committed to assisting those in our area. With the down economy, and the slower seasonal cycle, Diakonia's services are in high demand. This time it's our chance to give back.

The New Casino, Ocean Downs will be collecting can food items for Diakonia on November 7 - 11 and again on November 14 - 18. Those that donate items will have a chance to win casino bucks.

The Greene Turtle North, on 116th St. will donate 10% of their revenue generated on November 16. Be sure to head on over to the Turtle that Wednesday for dinner and/or drinks, the proceeds will go to help our neighbors.

Next month, Lighthouse Sound will host a Breakfast with Santa on December 10th. Breakfast will last from 7 until 11 am, and tickets are only $10. Around a 1/3 of Diakonia's guest are under the age of 12, the breakfast allows them one of the few chances to participate in the Christmas Holiday.

Diakonia is always in need, and appreciates any and all help. Diakonia operates a thrift store, Used to be Mine, which is always looking for donations of furniture, clothing and other goods. Proceeds from the store go to run the organization. Contributions of any amount are valuable to them as is a donation of your time; the organization couldn't operate without help from volunteers.

Touch the Sea

This Saturday the Delmarva Discovery Center, in nearby Pocomoke, will be hosting a wonderful learning and discovery event, Touch the Sea. Marine biologist, Andrew Wilson will be present with his 'aquatic stars.' He'll present a show, Under the Sea, which includes live animals at 1 pm & 3 pm. A wide variety of aquatic stars are expected to be present this Saturday, including a puffer fish, horseshoe crab, blue crabs and even a baby shark!

Children and adults are invited to learn all about what goes on 'Under the Sea.' Expect to walk away knowing what a mermaid's necklace is made from and if fish sleep.

Also present this Saturday will be Bernadette Gesser, local author of "Bob the Big Bad Bluefish" and the book's illustrator, Sarah Grangier. Guests will also have the chance to examine prehistoric fossils of aquatic life, such as fish and dinosaurs courtesy of Dr. Pete Whaley. The event will also have fish feeding, crafts, face painting and artwork on display by local artists.

Small with a Big Heart

Yesterday, I blogged on a Fundraiser for a local man recently diagnosed with cancer. The events were held yesterday at OC Golf Club and Fager's Island, and were a great success. I honestly don't have words to describe the outpouring of love and support shown yesterday. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, for a community with less than 10,000 year round individuals we certainly have a huge heart.

The Golf tournament became the largest fundraising tournament Ocean City Golf and Yacht club has ever hosted. Almost 200 people came out to play. Walking into Fager's last night you would never know that it was a Monday night during our off season. The place was packed with friends, family and local businesses - parking couldn't be found for blocks! So many items were donated and available for auction. It was great to see Mitch Scott up there at the raffle blocks doing the live auction, boosting the crowd to contribute!

There's something extremely touching to see so many familiar faces come together to support one of our own. We really are a special place, I don't think any other community could match the support that comes out of our tiny 4.6 square miles. To paraphrase Keenan - some faces he hasn't seen in months... other's it's been years, but to know that each person was there to help him was simply amazing. And that really sums up our town. Summer's get busy, sometimes life take a hold and has different paths for each of us, gaps of time can go by between seeing our friends - but if your a part of Ocean City, Ocean City will rally behind you. We've got something special, a great big heart!

Don't miss tonight's first fundraiser for a wonderful local, Charles Jeff Keenan, known as Keenan to many of his friends. Born and raised in the area, Keenan is well known in the community as a reliable and trustworthy person. This summer, Keenan was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma and now requires life-saving cancer treatments. Keenan, as well as many other in our community, is without health insurance. As expected, the cost of the treatments he requires are very costly.

Tonight and through this winter it'll be our chance to help a area member who has always been there to lend a hand. Today, the Ocean City Golf Club hosted a foursome golf tournament which will be followed by a party open to the public tonight at Fager's. Proceeds will go to help offset the medical costs. Tickets can be purchased at the door, for just $25 per person, which includes unlimited food and beer. Entertainment will be provided by DJ Wax, whose sadly is no stranger to the disease. A wide range of silent auction items will be available.

Tonight should be a wonderful event, be sure to come out to support the life of a great individual. After Tournament Party starts at 5pm at Fager's Island on 60th St. and the Bay.

3rd Annual Shell Shocked

Don't miss this weekend's 3rd Annual Shell Shocked at Fager's Island.

The event runs from 1 - 5 pm this Saturday and features unlimited Oysters and Evo Beers! You'll have the chance to enjoy them raw, steamed, fried and various other special creations. A few local chefs will be present to create some truly amazing Oyster-pieces. I'm a huge fan of them raw with a cider mignonette or baked with cheese and a little bacon... I can't think of anything more delicious than fresh local seafood.

If all you can eat Oyster's wasn't enough, to top off the event 5 different locally crafted Evolution Beers will be offered. I'm hoping they'll offer their seasonal brew, Jacques Au Lantern.

If Oyster's aren't your thing you can still enjoy the event, BBQ ribs and chicken will be available. Live music will be provided by a local band, Opposite Directions, who will be preforming on the Deck.

If you can't make it to the beach this weekend, try this great Apple-Ginger Mignonette with your favorite oysters

Apple-Ginger Mignonette
Ingredients
1/4 cup cider vinegar
2 tablespoons minced shallot
1/2 teaspoon finely grated peeled fresh ginger
1 cup finely chopped sweet apple (Fuji or Golden Delicious)
White pepper to taste

2 dozen freshly shucked oysters on the half shell

Directions
Stir together vinegar, shallot, pepper and ginger. Set aside. While you shuck oysters, add some of their huice to the mignonette. Stir in apple. Top each oyster off right before serving.

Halloween Treat

Happy Halloween! Can't wait to head home to enjoy my version of a Halloween Treat!

Candy Corn Martini
1/2 cup candy corn
1 1/2 cups good vodka
2 ounce Triple Sec
Fresh Lemon juice (1/2 lemon works)
Candy corn garnish
Colored Sugar

Combine candy corn and vodka in an airtight jar (I used an old mason jar) Set aside for at least 3 hours in the fridge (already cold for when your ready to make your treat)

Combine 4 ounces of your pre-made candy corn vodka, 2 ounce triple sec, lemon juice and shake. Sugar rim of glass with colored sugar, strain drink into martini glass, throw in a few candy corns for garnish. Makes two delicious Halloween Treats!

Halloween Weekend

It's finally Halloween weekend - the area is filled with fun events for the next few days.

Tonight, we'll be checking out Berlin for their Ghost Hayride Tour.

Tomorrow day, if the weather permits (no snow please!) there is either the Rehoboth Sea Witch Festival or Berlin's first ever Funky Thriller Halloween. Tomorrow at 4pm the town will offer events for the whole family. Haunted Hayrides will continue, plus a kids' costume parade, adult costume contest and plenty of games. There will also be some funky dance music - and I've heard rumors of a flash mob?

Tomorrow night is also HalloWine in nearby Whaleyville. Our four local wineries on the shore will be there offering tastings, plus plenty of activities for children.

If you're interested in the Bar Scene, be sure to stop by Seacrets tomorrow night for their annual costume party. There's always some very cool costumes, top prize is a trip for Jamaica for two! Fager's will also host a costume party with a chance to win $500 in cash! A few other bars around town will also be offering costume parties and prizes. Pretty much everyone is ready and rearing for a fun weekend.

If I'm going to blog about the Raven's event last week, I clearly have to blog about the Redskins Tailgate this weekend! Especially since both are our 'hometown' Maryland teams... and neither seems to be playing all that well (a given for one of them).

This Sunday at BJ's on the Water on 75th St. and the Bay, the famous Redskin Hogettes will be joining us to cheer on the team as they play the Buffalo Bills. The tailgate will feature an old fashioned Bull and Oyster Roast, with all the goodies! Party starts at 1pm and goes until the end of the game (game starts at 4pm). Happy Hour drink prices will be available all night. The tailgate is available for just $25 a person. As a bonus, since it's Halloween come dressed as your favorite NFL star! The Hogettes will be the judges, I'd say you could probably sway the vote if your dressed as a Redskin.

Monday, Trick or Treat?

In the past there's been a few nights that the annual Halloween 'Trick or Treat' event has been changed to accommodate various schedules. I've never completely understood the reasoning behind changing Trick or Treat to any other night besides Halloween night, October 31. I suppose some reasoning was that children would be staying up late on a school night... but isn't that half of the tradition? Provided parents ensure safety, it's a fun night for the kiddies. Yes, perhaps they'll stay up a little later than a regular school night, but that's what making memories is all about.

I'm happy to report that this year, Halloween 'Trick or Treat' in Ocean City will be on Halloween Night, October 31st. Children are invited to start their neighborhood tours at dusk, while nearby Berlin encourages children to Trick or Treat from 5 -7 pm since some neighborhoods can get very dark without street lights. Our own Ocean City Outlets encourages children to stop by from 4 - 6 pm on Monday Night to receive a treat from some of the Mall's vendors. Important to note, nearby Ocean Pines does not encourage Trick or Treating.

Remember to stay safe this Halloween! This is important for all parents, children and drivers! Parents, make sure to stay close to your children, carry a flashlight and emphasis safety habits. Drivers, be on the look out and slow down!

HalloWine & SeaWitches

If your looking for something to do this weekend, you're in luck! Nearby Whaleysville and Rehoboth, DE will be hosting two great events, perfect for families and folks of all ages.

Costa Ventosa Winery, located just a short drive from OC proper in Whaleysville will be hosting their first ever HalloWine Festival. Our 'Four on the Shore' wineries will be represented (Bordeleau, Fenwick Wine Cellars, Costa Ventosa and Layton's Chance) offering tastings and selling wine.

HalloWine will occur on Saturday from 5 - 10 pm. The winery will be transformed into a haunted vineyard with a bonfire, hayrides, live music, face painting and more! Be sure to don your Halloween threads for there will be a costume contest. Food, smores' and treats will be available plus complimentary wine tasting for the big kids. The best part is that a portion of the proceeds from this 'Spooktacular' event go to benefit the PJ Aldridge Foundation. Discounted tickets are in advance at the Wineries, however you can also purchase your ticket at the door, children are just $12 and those over 21 are $25.

Less than an hour away, Rehoboth Beach, DE will host their annual Sea Witch Halloween & Fiddler's Festival. A full weekend event, with events for every age. There will be live music, history tours, movies, scavenger hunts, a 5k walk/run ... that should give you an idea how extensive the list of events is. Events run from Friday - Sunday, during the town's Fiddler's Fest (which is on Saturday from 1 - 6 pm at the Convention Center). Many of Rehoboth's shops and restaurants will join in for the festival - offering activities, discounts and specials. Expect delicious food, fun events, art and treats throughout the weekend.

The Sea Witch is best known for it's fabulous Costume Parade. The parade starts at 11 am on Saturday and makes it's way down Rehoboth Ave. towards the beach. Expect a large mass of people, dressed in some frightening and hysterical costumes, in addition there will be floats, bands and more. Following the Parade, you'll have a chance to go on a horse drawn wagon ride, make a scarecrow, and play old fashioned beach games such as the Pumpkin Dash. If you've got the stamina sign up for the Sea Witch Hunt, of it hand-eye coordination's your thing try your hand at the Broom Tossing Contest.

Don't forget Trick or Treat, starting at 6:30 pm on Saturday visit local merchants for your Halloween Treats. Even Fido gets to join in on the fun, on Sunday at 1pm, bring him along in his best Halloween Costume for the Pet Contest Parade!

Haunted Paddle Tours and Ghoulish Bon Fires

It should be a great Autumn Eastern Shore weekend, weather is expected to be sunny and in the 70s with a cool breeze, of course dropping abit at night (wear your sweaters!).

If you're looking to get into the Halloween spirit and to enjoy some of our beautiful fall scenery, Ayers Creek Adventures is hosting a Haunted Paddle tonight and tomorrow.

This will be a great event for all, their paddle tours are wonderful for experienced kayakers and those just starting off. They'll make sure to stay at your speed.

Paddle tours will depart at 5, 6:30 and 8 o'clock. Warm up before and after by their bonfire, which will burn from 5 - 10 pm. They'll have Hot Dogs, Smores, Cider, Cocoa and other yummy treats for sale as well.

The best part about this event, it goes to benefit some great causes! Proceeds will be donated to the Maryland Coastal Bays Program and Habitat for Humanity Worcester County.

While on the tour be on the look out for Marsh Monsters!

Ravens Weekend at the Beach!

This weekend is for you Ravens Fans, locals and visitors alike! Head on over to the Castle in the Sand this weekend for their Rockin' Ravens Weekend.

This Saturday, Ravens fans are invited to gather at the Castle in the Sand's beach bar, Coconuts for an Eastern Shore Tailgate Party. The event will be run from 5 - 8 pm, all are welcome to enjoy the festivities. Expect beer specials, a bonfire and a pig roast! BBQ chicken and all the trimmings will also be available.

DJ Marcus, a Raven's favorite will be playing the tunes all weekend long! Get our your purple for a Ravens Good Time.

Those without a reservation at the Castle can also join in the fun - adults are just $25 and kids are $12. Cash Bar for all.

High Tide Music Fest 2012

I don't know how to control my excitement over this news.... I actually don't think I can control it, I'm ECSTATIC, STOKED! WHAT-HAVE-YOU THRILLED!! This is seriously like a dream come true, I've talked about this being something OC should look into.... and it looks like they are finally getting their act together! I strongly believe it's all thanks to the Dew Tour, it proved we can handle larger events. It's about time we get some great music here, I'm pretty over our standard Springfest and SunFest line ups.

The event will be for two days in early June, and will run from noon - 11pm each day. There will be three stages set up on the beach, similar to how the Dew Tour was setup. The Town Council has already unanimously approved Founders Entertainment to go ahead with the planning. Co-founder of Founders, Tom Russell has promoted Bonnaroo and The Governor's Ball in NY.

According to DelmarvaNow, the group is looking into an wide variety of musicians, to appeal to all age groups. To name just a few, Adele, Paul Simon, Tom Petty, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Mumford & Sons, The Roots and Florence + The Machine. Apparently the Town Council will have final approval of the artists booked.... be good to us please! Tickets are expected to run around $75 - $90 for a full day.

Tasers coming to OC

I came across an article in one of our local papers, DelmarvaNow that Ocean City Police will now be equipped with Stun Guns. Apparently the Ocean City council met a few weeks ago and unanimously approved the Tasers.

For those unaware, Tasers are weapons that when shot will attach onto their victim and expel a powerful electrical charge which is capable of paralyzing a person. Although not always deadly, there has been much controversy over stun gun's affects. Apparently, nearby area law enforcement are already using these, such as Snow Hill and Worcester county sheriff offices.

I'm not sure how I feel about these, there's pros and cons on both sides of the argument. However, I do feel that some of our local police, especially those that are recruited for summer employment are young, inexperienced and often over zealous (this DOES NOT apply to all!). It worries me that their use will be abused in Ocean City. I just hope the Tasers are placed into the proper hands of those that fully understand their risks.

Here's a few nearby spooktacular events to check out

Berlin, MD - Ghost Tour Hayrides

For two weekends Historic Berlin, MD will be offering guided hayride Ghost tours through the town. Although I've never been witnesses to a ghostly event, the town is known to have a few apparitions that walk amongst the living. Sounds like a great event to learn more about the town's history... probably a few scary secrets most are unaware of. Hayrides will be approximately a 1/2 hour long and will be narrated as you are pulled through the streets.
Hayrides will begin at the corner of Pitts and Main Street on October 21, 22, 28, 29 and 30th; 6 - 8 pm. $8.00 a person. Call 443- 783-1409 for more information
Berlin Chamber

Furnace Town - Furnace Fright/Ghost Hunt
Just a short drive from Ocean City is Furnace Town, a historic iron furnace site and now a Living Heritage Museum. Furnace Town operated in the early 1800s, at one time employing hundreds of people. The town's success was relatively short lived, and the majority of the people moved on to find other work, though a few stayed and it's been said their spirits still haunt the Historic site.
On October 22 families are welcome to the town to experience the history. Children are welcome to dress up and join in the costume parade, there will be trick-or-treating with the local artisans on site, and crafts and games. For the older kids, ghost stories and history of the town will be read.
At night, adults are welcome to join in the Ghost Hunt Walk which begins at 8pm. Call 410-632-2032 for more information.
Furnace Town

Georgetown, DE - All Hallow's Revenge

About an hour out, Georgetown DE offers what appears to be the scariest of the Haunts in Del-Mar. The location offers two bone chilling indoor spooks, plus a ghoulish walk through woods and a small town. With a legend to go with the nightmare, it looks like this may be the scare of your life!

Delmarva Discovery Center, Pocomoke, MD - Delmarva Haunting

In nearby Pocomoke, MD just off of the beautiful Pocomoke River resides the Delmarva Discovery Center. The center focuses on preserving our local cultural and natural heritage, a place of learning for visitors of all ages. In honor of the 'spooky' season, they'll be transforming a the entire center into a 2 story Haunted Ghost Ship. This event is not for the squeamish, or the sensitive hearts. Recommended for adults and children 12 and up, head on out for a ghoulish evening of scares and screams!

Pemberton Historical Park, Salisbury, MD - Spooktacular

Annually held at historic Pemberton Park, this event is geared towards children from 6 - 12. Family friendly, children will enjoy crafts, pumpkin decorating, face painting, costume contests and more. For those looking for a little more hocus pocus, enjoy frightening Eastern Shore Folk Tales and seeing some of the park's live reptiles. Don't forget to bring your already carved pumpkin for the Carving Competition!

The Old Parsonsburg Firehouse will hold their annual Haunted Forest for two weekends this year. The event always starts at dark, be prepared for a 'bumpy' hayride and a thrilling walk through.

Frontier Town - Haunted Trail
This will be the first year our local Frontier Town will hold their Haunted Trail! Located in West OC, just a 5 minute drive from OC proper. I've been told the event is cautious of young children, so it really is an event for all ages.

Salisbury Zoo - Not So Scary Halloween Happenings
I think the name says it all! This event is for children 10 & under and for anyone else who isn't up for the eerie. Children are welcome to explore the zoo in costume. Special events, games and candy tables will be set up through the zoo. Tickets are available in advance or at the gate. Don't forget to come dressed the part, there will be a Halloween costume contest!

Despite my unrequited love of summer, I do have a soft spot for fall. Especially for the gloriously warm fall days followed by cool breezy nights, the days that are perfect for a beach bonfire! Regardless, while most are busy changing out their home decor to match the current season, I'm still dreaming of just a few more beach days. Thus, I have an extremely hard time transitioning my beachy cool blues and aquas to rich and warm golden hues.

I know many people that pull out all the stops... for every holiday. I've always had a hard time with seasonal and Holiday decorating. By the time my fall leaves and spooky Halloween decorations are out, I'm busy carving the turkey and mashing taters. Have no fear... Santa Santa always sticks around long enough to give cupid a little kiss.

Until today, I decided I was going to forget about the seasonal decor this year... But then I came across some lovely ideas for seasonal decorating that will allow me to keep some of my 'beach' out.

OktoberFest at the Beach

I know Ocean City may not be on your radar of places to celebrate Oktoberfest, but this weekend we'll be celebrating with a bunch of events throughout the town.

The Convention Center will be hosting their 30th Annual Oktoberfest on Friday and Saturday from 11 am - 10 pm. There will be polka dancers and bands, traditional German songs and folk dances performed by the Alpenrose Dancers. Even if your German dancing's abit rusty, be sure to bring your dancing shoes because they'll teach you! Don't worry if you're abit shy, there will plenty of German beer flowing! Plus lots of contests and entertainment. Don't miss out on the German grub, or the KnockWurst eating contest!

The Convention Center will also host an Oktoberfest Art and Craft fair, which will feature artist from near and far offering a variety of different works. There will be German artist offering traditional German toys, and crafts. Plus lots of German goodies such as roasted nuts and apple strudel! The fair will run from 11 am - 6 pm on Friday and Saturday.

Oktoberfest at the Convention Center: Vendor's and Events

Berlin will be hosting their first ever Oktoberfest this Saturday, on main street. Much like their other events, the town will close off the street in front of the Atlantic Hotel for the celebration. The event runs from noon until 6 and will feature German music and entertainment. The Cow Polkas will be in attendance to serenade us with a little western twang polka! The Wanderers, an Um Pa Band, will also be performing. The event will include a Beer garden with German style beers from local brewer Burley Oak. Enjoy Pretzels, strudel, bratwurst and sauerkraut while your at the event.

This Sunday Macky's will open for their Oktoberfest, one of their last events for the season. Tickets are just $30 for the event, which runs from 12 - 3 pm. Delmarva's newest online magazine, ShoreBread features 'slices of Coastal Life.' It has a wide range of topics, from local restaurant specials, to events and happenings, to beauty and renovations. It really has something for everyone - a publication for all Delmarvians.

I highly recommend stopping by to try a "slice."

I recently blogged on one of my favorite spots, Micky Fins. This week Shore Bread featured a great article about Micky Fins owner/chef, Gary Beach. The piece dives into Gary's history, and what inspired him to be who he is today. Shore Bread also featured a few of Gary's amazing recipes, which are guaranteed to make your mouth water.

Lucky for us, Gary shared my favorite recipe that he's created, Tuna Chunk's with Mango Vinaigrette and Spicy Mayo. This dish isn't fooling around, although typically served as an app, I could easily eat it for dinner... lunch.. breakfast you name it - it's that good. It's actually the appetizer that Micky Fins featured at this past week's Believe in Tomorrow Benefit. From the moment I entered Seacrets for the benefit, all I heard about was Micky Fins amazing Tuna taster. The sample was so popular that Micky Fins had to run back to the restaurant to get more to meet the huge demand! I'm not kidding, it's a real home-run. Imagine freshly caught, perfectly sliced sushi grade tuna over seaweed salad, complimented by a sweet vinaigrette with a little zing from the Spicy Mayo. Absolutely a must try!

Weekend Update, Harbor Day at the Docks

I think my weekend wish might just be granted.... Looks like we are in store for a Sunny Fall Weekend!

Today is beautiful, almost 80 degrees. It's due to cool off for Saturday and Sunday. A perfect ending for September and a great start for October.

In addition to Wine Fest this weekend, on Saturday Ocean City will be hosting our 4th Annual Harbor Day at the Docks!

The event will be hosted in the parking lot of West Ocean City's Commercial Fishing Harbor from 10 am - 4 pm.

Harbor Day celebrates Ocean City's maritime traditions, such as commercial and sport fishing, seafood processing and cooking, marine aquaculture and sea safety. It's a great event for everyone - adults and children alike. Local chefs come out to demonstrate some of their favorite seafood recipes, plus great food from our nearby restaurants will be available. Artists will showcase nautical paintings, crafts and jewelry. Tour one of our Coast Gaurd's boats, or learn how to quickly put on water survival gear.... you can even challenge other visitors! Children can participate in arts and crafts, learn about local sea life (this is pretty hands on, be prepared to touch a few under the sea creatures!), and play on a moon-bounce/jungle gym. Over all Harbor Day is an amazing educational event, which honors our heritage. See you there!

It's time for some Wine

This weekend Ocean City will celebrate our annual Wine Fest at the Beach. It's one of my favorite fall events, and I'm really hoping for some sun this weekend. We saw a little of the shy guy today, but it doesn't do me much good since I've been working all day. A sunny fall weekend of East Coast Wines, Micro-Brewed Beers and live entertainment would really hit the spot.

Wine Fest runs this Friday, September 30 & Saturday, October 1 from 11am - 7pm. The event is held at our Inlet, in the parking area. Various tents will be set up for vendors on the blacktop closest to the pier and rides - pretty hard to miss. Unlike other events held at the inlet, the remaining parking lot will be open for visitors to park - however, if attending and driving *Please Don't Drink and Drive!*

There will be 12 Vineyards attending the event, all from various East Coast locations. 5 of the Wineries are Maryland based, and one from nearby Fenwick Island. Last year Wine Fest opened is tents to MicroBrews, this year I am very excited that there will be 2 Breweries there. One of the Breweries is local, from St. Michaels, and the other is from Colorado. I'm actually extremely thrilled that this beer will be here, Fat Tire from the New Belgium Brewery. I've been to this brewery in Colorado, and it is by far one of my favorite microbrews. I typically have a pretty hard time trying to find it in this area, hopefully they will get a great reception.

Remember to bring a little extra dough for some local food vendors that will be available within the festival. There will also be plenty of Arts & Crafts vendors. Last year I found some beautiful jewelry, wine gifts and accessories and some 'bling bling' aka sparkly sport team shirts. Many of the Vineyards will have wines for sale too.... pack light, you may have a heavy load on your way home.

Live entertainment will be provided throughout both days. Bands play on a stage set up on the beach and can be enjoyed by all at the festival.

Believe in Tomorrow, House by the Sea Benefit

Last night Seacret's hosted their annual Believe in Tomorrow's House by the Sea Beach Bash Benefit. For those that haven't heard of Believe in Tomorrow, it's an amazing charity that helps with housing services for families with critically ill children. Their 'House by the Sea' is located here in Ocean City on 66th st. The house serves as a place for families to escape the stress of medical treatments, and spend quality time as a whole family unit. The house allows families and children to relax, renew themselves and often lets these precious children enjoy childhood. For many, this is there first 'vacation' together as a family.

The house itself has six different units, allowing multiple families a chance to getaway and enjoy special time with each other at the beach. The event last night benefits not only the house but the families who visit. The charity helps them enjoy some local activities while they are staying at the house; many of the events are the simple things that we take for granted each day. I couldn't think of a better charity to support.

The majority of our local restaurants came out last night to support the cause. The event offered a dine-around, with tables set up for each restaurant and their specially prepared dining options. It was great to see our community reaching out for this cause. Although everything was extremely tasty, a few of my favorites were Micky Fins, Pepper's Tavern, The Satellite and of course all the tasty desert options.

The event also offered a chance at winning $10,000 and a large silent auction. Overall, I'm proud of our town, we may be little but it's clear we have some big hearts - and who wouldn't, the House by the Sea really is an amazing cause.

Are you the next Ocean City Star?

Ocean City's looking for a few new 'Stars' to appear in our next town commercial! That's right... this is your chance to promote our favorite beach town (Ocean City, MD... obviously)!

The commercial is tentatively scheduled to be produced on October 12th. They are looking for multiple 'stars.' A family with parents aged 35 - 45 and children from 8 - 12. They also need female dancers ages 25 - 35, male golfers 35 - 45 and a fit male to play as a jet skier. 24 extras will be needed, extras will be paid $200 per part. The 'fit' male jetskier part will pay around $250.

And here's the best little piece ... they are looking for real people - not professional actors! I personally couldn't be more thrilled, there's something a little strange about our current town representative... 'Rodney.' Although a great marketing campaign, Rodney is a hired actor, not a real life guard. If you're drowning, don't count of him to save your life - he only rescues for vacation. Although, I think 'Rodney' may be here to stay, it'd be wonderful to have locals and people that generally love our town to represent and promote Ocean City!

Bait is Back!

Micky Fins, in the Ocean City Fishing Center in West OC is one of my favorite local restaurants. They have a great spot right on the Marina, with beautiful views. You can choose to either sit out on one of their two decks, or inside. The restaurant itself isn't overly huge, so you always have a nice cozy feeling when you dine with them. I personally like the downstairs deck bar, it's covered but you still get an outdoor feel to it, perfect for a nice beach afternoon. Cool breezes and sun! Not only do they have great food, but they have a great crew. The servers are always there to greet you with a smile, making you feel more like family than a patron.

I'm very excited to announce that they've extended their Happy Hour times for the autumn season. Happy Hour will now be available Monday - Friday from 4 - 7 pm (whole extra hours for those of us that work!). In addition, Bait is Back (mmmm delicious calamari appetizers)! During Happy Hour they offer amazing food specials that are always the perfect portion to fill you for the night! Nothing gets much better than discounted drinks and dinner for just around 5 bucks!

Starting next week, October 2nd - 16th Micky Fins will be participating in the Fall Restaurant Week. During the weekdays be sure to stop by for their 2 course price fixed menu for $20. Always a great option for 'Date Night'! Plus, this fall they'll be coming up with a bunch of new special items to reflect the autumn season. Their specials are always a 'Home Run' so I can't wait to see what they have in store for us. Micky Fins will stay open through October, their seasonal closing party is October 30th. Keeping Dry

Although yesterday day turned out pretty nice, it rained cats and dogs last night. I'm still keeping my fingers crossed (those weathermen have been wrong plenty of times) but the forecast looks a bit dreary for this weekend.

We're holding on strong today, a little gray and gloomy, but DRY and isn't that the most important part?

But really... what's a little rain? We aren't really going to melt like the Wicked Witch of the West. I'm not sure why rain is so looked down upon, fun can always be had despite it. Boardwalk Bike rides are always fun, just wear your bathing suit or a plastic trash bag. There are two indoor mini golf courses, but you can avoid waiting in line if you play outside in the rain. Think of all the amazing possibilities, including your very own spot on the beach with no one to bother you, I'm sure beach umbrellas will be available!

If being a little damp isn't your thing, Sunfest offers plenty of tents for all the crafts... you'll certainly keep dry in there. And of course all the food at Sunfest, including my favorite, deep fried Oreos, are all under the magnificent food tent! Feel free to stuff your face in cozy dryness surrounded by a bunch of other people doing just the same.

Sadly, rain might put an end to the Fiddlers Convention. Without a tent and with all the electrical equipment it might be a little dangerous. Berlin's always worth a visit though, great food and now great drink at their new Brewery, Burley Oak. Hopefully the forecast is wrong, and we can proceed with a dry gray weekend. Either way, Happy Friday everyone!

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a beautiful weekend. We've had some rainy weather, and traditionally this weekend tends to be more of the Rainfest than Sunfest. So far weathers holding out, a pretty good sign!

Sunfest
Today marks the first day of our 35th annual Sunfest Festival. Hosted at the Inlet, Sunfest is very similar to our annual Springfest. The event has been voted as America's #1 Art and Craft Show for the 2nd year in a row. There will be great food, live entertainment, huge tents filled with art and craft vendors, and hayrides.

In addition to the Inlet events this weekend, each day from 9 - 9 thousands of kites will be flying from 1st - 6th Street on the beach. The event centers at the Kite Loft on 5th street. Not only will there be fun events, air shows and demonstrations each day but they will also host impromptu games for the entire family. Expect competitions, relays, workshops and lots more for fun and frolic.

Treasure Hunt
To add to the Sunfest Fun, local jeweler Park Place Jewelers will be hosting two separate Beach Treasure Hunts! Each 'Hunt' will take place on the beach between 2nd - 3rd street, in front of the Park Place Jewelry location. A 50' by 100' section of the beach will be roped off for each hunt, 100 contestants will be invited to search and dig for an hour through the area for their chance at a little free bling. I suggest arriving early to save your place to be the next big jewelry winner! Hunts will take place on 9/24 from 4 - 5 pm and 9/25 from 1 - 2 pm.

OC Cruzers
On Sunday, the OC Cruzers show will host their last vintage car display. 14 vehicles will be on display along Somerset Street Plaza from 2 - 7 right off the boardwalk. It's a great break for the Sunfest hustle.

Fiddlers Convention
If your looking to get out of town, Berlin, MD is hosting their annual Fiddlers Convention this weekend starting tomorrow night. Bluegrass musicians from across the country will preform along main street all weekend long. The town is the perfect spot for an event like this. Main street gets closed down for an open air stage, barrels of hay will act as seating for guests. It's always a good thing to bring a blanket and beach chair just in case. Stores and restaurants will be open, feel free to browse the historic town... you never know what amazing antiques and art you might come home with. The town also has some great eats; I highly recommend stopping by the Globe, Atlantic Hotel/ Drummer's Cafe and Rayne's Reef. Berlin recently welcomed their first Brewery, Burley Oak Brewing Company, while in town stop by for a locally crafted pint.

Twelfth Night
Finally, if your into the 'dramatic', this weekend Ocean City welcomes the Brown Box Theatre Project's Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. The Brown Box Theatre Project comes to us from local, Kyler Tuastin who has since moved from this area. Since this will be their first time to Ocean City, I don't know much about the company or play. I can say that I am very excited to check out the performance this weekend. I can't think of a better backdrop for a play about a shipwreck. Ocean City will host three performances. Friday night, 9/23 at 6pm at the Castle in the Sand on 37th St. and Sunday 9/25 at 1 pm & 7 pm at Sunset Park on the bay.

In addition to the Inlet events this weekend, each day from 9 - 9 thousands of kits will be flying from 1st - 6th Street on the beach. The event centers at the Kite Loft on 5th street. Not only will there be fun events, air shows and demonstrations each day but they will also host impromptu games for the entire family. Expect competitions, relays, workshops and lots more for fun and frolic.
Sunfest Kite Festival Schedule

Treasure Hunt
To add to the Sunfest Fun, local jeweler Park Place Jewelers will be hosting two separate Beach Treasure Hunts! Each 'Hunt' will take place on the beach between 2nd - 3rd street, in front of the Park Place Jewelry location. A 50' by 100' section of the beach will be roped off for each hunt, 100 contestants will be invited to search and dig for an hour through the area for their chance at a little free bling. I suggest arriving early to save your place to be the next big jewelry winner! Hunts will take place on 9/24 from 4 - 5 pm and 9/25 from 1 - 2 pm.

OC Cruzers
On Sunday, the OC Cruzers show will host their last vintage car display. 14 vehicles will be on display along Somerset Street Plaza from 2 - 7 right off the boardwalk. It's a great break for the Sunfest hustle.

Fiddlers Convention
If your looking to get out of town, Berlin, MD is hosting their annual Fiddlers Convention this weekend starting tomorrow night. Bluegrass musicians from across the country will preform along main street all weekend long. The town is the perfect spot for an event like this. Main street gets closed down for an open air stage, barrels of hay will act as seating for guests. It's always a good thing to bring a blanket and beach chair just in case. Stores and restaurants will be open, feel free to browse the historic town... you never know what amazing antiques and art you might come home with. The town also has some great eats. I highly recommend stopping by the Globe, Atlantic Hotel/ Drummer's Cafe and Rayne's Reef. Berlin recently welcomed their first Brewery, Burley Oak Brewing Company, while in town stop by for a locally crafted pint.

Twelfth Night
Finally, if your into the dramatic, this weekend Ocean City welcomes the Brown Box Theatre Project's Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. The Brown Box Theatre Project comes to us from local, Kyler Tuastin who has since moved from this area. Since this will be their first time to Ocean City, I don't know much about the company or play. I can say that I am very excited to check out the performance this weekend. Ocean City will host three performances. Friday night, 9/23 at 6pm at the Castle in the Sand on 37th St. and Sunday 9/25 at 1 pm & 7 pm at Sunset Park on the bay.

Putting a Damper on 'Bike Week's' Parade

Well... Mother nature put a bit of a Damper on this past week, opening up the sky and really letting the water flow. But the rain certainly didn't stop the Bikers. Although it might not be nearly as pleasant.. those Bikers were out in the rain driving all around the Delmarva area headed to their next Bike Week event. I felt pretty bad for them though, not exactly the weekend they were hoping for.

The past few years we've had great weather for the Bike Week festivities, it's a shame that the rain came during our first Inlet Bike Fest, but hopefully the sun will shine for this weekend's upcoming Sunfest. Sunfest as of lately has been more like... well Rainfest. Keep those finger's crossed that the Rain's over for a great weekend ahead!

We'll clearly we're not in Kansas, never were... but today a decent sized Kansas Tornado touched down in North Ocean City!

According to what I've heard and seen on good ole Facebook the Tornado affected areas around 70 - 100 st. I've heard reports of some damage from 74-77 such as trees down. I have also heard of power outages in North OC. Good luck to all of those out there especially the bikers in town, hope everyone is safe and sound!

OC Bike Fest

The bikers have been slowly arriving since this weekend to celebrate Ocean City's first Bike Fest Weekend. For years we've been hosting activities as apart of Bike Week... but this year we officially have our own Inlet event.

The event will be held in conjunction with the traditional Delmarva Bike week... so be prepared for alot of activities this weekend. Technically, events begin tomorrow, but we already have plenty of bikers in town riding around showing off their rides.

This week gets a tad bit of criticism from some locals, particularly because of the noise and I think the traditional stereotype associated with 'bikers.' Over the past few years in town, despite the noise, I've found this to be one of the best fall events we have. Bikers on average have a higher income level than any of our other festival weekends, meaning more money to spend on our little town. In addition, they don't bring much with them just a few changes of clothes. This means that everything will need to be bought here in town - great for all of our bars and restaurants. Overall, Bike communities are one of the highest donators to charitable organizations in the United States. All this being said, I've got my ear plugs ready... for a great weekend!

The Inlet festival this weekend will offer the traditional food vendors, a bunch of great bands, stunt teams and thrill shows. Admission is $15 for adults, and is valid for all 4 days of the event. Be sure to check out their schedule so you don't miss any of the great happenings: BIKEFEST SCHEDULE

Sizzlin' Summer of Stars, Labor Day Send Off

I honestly can't believe it's Labor Day weekend already, this summer has certainly flown by. Of course I'm a little sad, but I do love September and Ocean City's 'Second Season.' (more on that later...)

This past summer every Saturday on the Beach Ocean City hosted Disney's Sizzlin' Summer of Stars. Free events for the family right on the beach. To all children's delight, various Disney performers and actors graced our small town with their presence. On dates with out a 'star' we had Disney's road crew. The road crew led children in dances, songs and some interactive activities.

To kick off our last big summer weekend, Ocean City has just announced one more Disney Star! This weekend, Adam Hicks from "Lemonade Mouth" and "Zeke and Luther" will be here. He'll perform from 5:30 - 6:30, then for the following hour he'll answer any questions from the crowd! Finally from 7:30 - 8:30 there will be a public meet and greet and autograph signing.

Next Saturday, September 10th Hooper's Crab House will be hosting their 3rd Brews on the Beach Craft Beer Festival. They are predicting that this will be the best one yet!

MD Coastal Bays - Looking for a New Best Friend!

Yesterday the Maryland Coastal Bays Program announced their new Spokesdog Contest! They are looking for an area dog to help promote the importance of picking up pet waste.

Although pet waste may be 'natural' when it comes in contact with our area waterways it acts as a fertilizer, promoting excess plant growth and can rob the water of vital oxygen. It can also pollute the water with disease.

Area pet owners can submit their 'best friend's' photos with a little information about their pet and why they'd make a great Spokesdog. Submissions will be available until September 29th. The Program will pick their favorites and online voting will continue until October 15th. They will announce their new 'best friend' on October 17th!

Thanks Be! Irene wasn't Mean!

As I said in the past two blogs, I'd rather be safe than sorry (Irene's on the Move). Irene came, but her effects were slightly more similar to a Noreaster than a category 3 Hurricane - and thank God for that! I think all of Ocean City is relieved that she went easy on us and we can get back to our daily routine. Since the town evacuated all visitors, and locals - I think next weekend is going to be one for the books! Bring it on Labor Day!

After Preparing for Irene - packing up and boarding my house, nearby areas were also issued evacuation ordinances, such as West Ocean City and any low lying areas along the Eastern Shore. It turned out to be pretty much everywhere from Ocean City to the Bay Bridge. I wasn't left with too many places to go, so I wound up staying in the safest spot in OC and riding Irene out.

It was somewhat frightening to sign a waiver that said I understood the risks of staying in town, and that Emergency Services would be unavailable to me. I was also asked to list my next of kin, just in case. It was pretty creepy to be left in a ghost town, it reminded me of something out of a zombie movie. But I honestly believe I was blessed to be able to stay. We had the most amazing sunset on Friday, the night before Irene. I've never seen anything quite as spectacular. The beauty of it spread over the entire night sky, it was as if the sun was even setting over the Ocean.

Irene started blowing in the afternoon on Saturday, however the majority of that day was pretty gloomy. You could see the waves begin to really kick up by the mid afternoon. Unfortunately the storm surge hit at the same time as high tide, around 6pm on Saturday the water broke over the blue storm walls on the boardwalk.

As high tide went down, Irene's surge began to recede. The wind was our next threat, but we were lucky she didn't cause too much damage.

Sunday morning was a little gray, but the day turned out beautiful. It truly was a local's dream, not only did our little beach community make it... but for a few hours it was left just to us. All those who weathered out Irene were up early trying to clean up and get on with summer. The town allowed anyone with residence or business purpose in Ocean City proper to enter, everyone else was welcomed later Sunday afternoon.

For the first part of the day... us locals had the beach and town all to ourselves... in August! Absolutely unheard of!

It was a prefect beach day, the waves were great... despite a lot of clean up and a little wind, I'd say it was an amazing experience for any local to get our town to our very own-selves... even if it was just for a few hours.

Preparing for Irene

Summer still isn't over and Ocean City's a ghost town... literally. I'd say I've seen about 5 people today, 2 of which were police coming to make sure that I was preparing to evacuate.

Part timers are already gone, homes completely boarded up. For us locals.... the real work is just beginning. Having to remove everything of any value and pack it up.... it's somewhat frightening. Everything is inside, my pretty garden gone, lawn furniture removed, anything that could blow is tied down. Looks like summer ended early this year.

The day started off with a little peak of sun rays, it's slowly getting cloudy. I may try and walk up to the beach before I am forced out. It's a pretty cool sight to see an empty beach in August, and a little creepy at the same time.

The Police stopped by to let me know that Water and Power will be shut off today around 6pm. Whether this is true... or an evacuation tactic I can't be sure. I know we'll loose power tomorrow. It looks like the eye is going to hit us dead on. But this means one additional day that my freezer will be without power... guess we better eat up the next few days. I've packed all frozen food into a cooler, by the time it thaws we'll be able to cook on a grill or open flame. Who know's what we'll have to use to make do. We are going to ride it out in nearby Berlin, we'll loose power but hopefully won't be hit like Ocean City will. I'll say that we are completely stocked up and ready though. I have the first aid kit and medical needs, identification, rain gear.... Lets hope the roof stays on!

I hope Ocean City will still be here - I'm sure it will... I am predicting that once the water goes down sand will be a few feet high and covering most of the streets. I am curious of how much it'll flood. I've seen a few feet from tropical storms and noreasters, but this time they are calling for 6 foot storm surges. Given the power of the storm and rain coming down, that could mean a few additional feet of flooding. Just in case everything in the basement is up. Good luck to all those who have a ground level home.

To everyone staying in Ocean City good luck -- yes there are a few that are going to ride it out despite the evacuation notices. Most are boat owners with no where else to go (Irene's going to hit anywhere along the coast) a few are emergency personel... a few just stubborn souls that want to stay and see her damage. I'd like to see what she does, but not without power or water for the next... who knows how many days. I've got my pink golashes and rain coat... I'll be back when they'll let us.

Irene's on the move

Irene's finally on the move, and she's headed up and west. It looks like she's keeping on track with the projected path. Right now she's a little to the East of Southern Florida. According to The Weather Channel "Irene poses an extraordinary threat and is one that no one has yet experienced from North Carolina to the mid-Atlantic." Essentially... that's us.

Ocean City just went into a Phase 3 Emergency Plan. Any visitors in town must leave today, hopefully by 12 midnight. Police officials do not want anyone staying in town. Anyone crossing into the town after 12 midnight must have proper identification. Police can refuse to let you into town if you do not have the proper purpose of entry. All locals must leave town by 5pm tomorrow. Again, this it stands now, we are in Phase 3 and the town has issued a MANDATORY evacuation of Ocean City.

As of now we are expecting the storm to begin on Saturday morning, with winds of 120 mph. This will make Irene a Category 3 Hurricane, with an estimated storm surge of 9 - 12 feet above the normal level. This will create some structural damage and can create utility problems.

Be prepared and safe!! Please listen to the town's recommendations!

Hurricane Irene... Slow and Steady?

Hurricane Irene seems to be all anyone is talking about. Perhaps it's because we're on the coast... or perhaps there's nothing else the media can focus on. Either way, Hurricane Irene's all over the news and is the talk of the town. No matter what happens, we've got to treat mother nature with respect, it's better to be safe than sorry.

Ocean City hasn't seen a real damaging Hurricane in years, sadly we are more than overdue for a major storm.

So far, Ocean City has begun to implement a plan, we are currently in 'Phase 1' The plan clearly will change given the Hurricane's path. Currently Irene is still hovering over the Bahamas, slowly moving to the north. Although she's slow, she's big. It seems that experts are worried about her size, as she grows she gains strength. Even if she doesn't hit us, we could feel major impact from just her outer winds alone.

Of course, none of us really know what Mother Nature's up to. I'm pretty sure we are all hoping that Irene will lessen in strength or even head west out to sea. Unfortunately, from what I've been hearing many experts feel that Irene may have the perfect scenario to become a major storm to hit our coast. Again I'd rather everyone be safe than sorry.

Ocean City has implemented a Phase 1 Emergency Plan, pretty much if you were planning on traveling this weekend, please make other arrangements. Since the town has issued a plan, hotels should let you out of your deposit. International students on work visa are being relocated across the bridge. We have over 4,000 students this summer, the town is planning on helping them move as swiftly as possible. For any locals, please be prepared to evacuate if the town issues an evacuation notice (for any that remember, they will sound the sirens which can be heard throughout town). The town will keep us updated on their website, and will be provided on the emergency line, 410-723-666 and www.ocmdemergency.com or 1670 AM.

If Irene continues on the expected path, her winds should hit us around Saturday morning, full force Saturday Afternoon.

*Fully Charged Cell phone and extra battery if possible

*Pet Care Items - food, proper identifications and vaccine info, leash etc

Shake Rattle and Roll?

By now I am sure all of you know that the East Coast was hit by a 5.9 Earthquake today... unless you live in a cave because facebook and twitter went a little nuts (something tells me if you're reading this, than you aren't in a cave!)

The quake's epicenter was a tad bit south of us in Richmond, VA. The quake was apparently a 1/2 mile down and we could strongly feel it's affects here in Ocean City. Apparently the tremble was felt as far north as Rhode Island and as far south as North Carolina.

Although this isn't the first time the east coast has felt the shake of an Earthquake, it was definitely my first... most likely one of the first to hit Ocean City. Last year DC felt a little shake, with a smaller Earthquake originating in Gaithersburg, MD.

For my first Tremble, the experience was pretty cool. The building had a slight sway to it. It reminded me of being on a boat on a decently calm day. I think many had the same reaction I had... Why is the building moving.... ?? As the building continued to sway I realized this wasn't a Jet breaking a sound barrier causing a little movement but an EARTHQUAKE!!!

Pretty neat experience, I was a little jealous last year when everyone over the bridge felt the Gaithersburg quake. Now I can cross that off my bucket list: ~~Earthquake~~

Beach goers also felt a little rumble. I've been told it felt like a large gust of wind moving your beach chair... only there was no wind. Happily, Ocean City made it out alright, perhaps a few fallen papers and shelf items... I hope we'll survive (something tells me we'll be just fine!)

Sea Turtles Near our Beaches

I'm madly in love with pretty much all marine life. Mermaids, seahorses, tropical fish, crabs... Sea Turtles This past year I was fortunate to swim with sea turtles for the first time, it was an amazing experience. They are extremely graceful, magnificent... and very quick.

First you were all like "whoa", and we were like "whoa", and you were like "whoa..."... You're ridin' it, dude!

I'm well aware that marine life (including Loggerhead Turtles) travel wherever they please, and although I am not surprised to know that we have Sea Turtles in our nearby seas... I'm somewhat shocked to hear that they have laid eggs on a beach just a few miles north of Ocean City. Loggerheads are an endangered species and can be found in the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian and Mediterranean Sea. Loggerheads typically nest along the Eastern Shore as far north as Virginia... these guys are quite a few miles from home!

According to breaking news from DelmarvaNow! Today a 4 foot loggerhead turtle laid almost 200 eggs on the beach at Cape Henlopen State Park. This is the first nesting in Delaware. Today workers and volunteers scurried to remove the eggs and rebury them about 100 yards up on higher sand. Rescue crews will attempt to keep people away from the location, so they are not disturbed. The eggs are buried as deep as 28 inches. Loggerhead eggs can incubate from 40 to 90 days.

Look out for Sea Turtles this fall, we could have them as early as Late September! Hopefully we'll have a warm fall and temperate weather for these little guys... we are abit farther north and colder than they are used to. I can't wait to see live baby sea turtles making their way for their first swim in the sea! Typically babies hatch during the night... I hope someone will be watching over them to make sure they make it safely.

White Marlin Update

The first two days have been relatively calm, large crowds of course but nothing too outrageous. It feels like it might be a small year... but only time will tell.

A large Tuna was brought in yesterday, 279 lbs. Pretty good size for it's division, I wouldn't be surprised if it will be the largest.

A decent sized White was brought in, I hope we'll see something more... but given the past 2 days it could be it.

It's Here... 38th White Marlin Open

Today marks the first fishing day in the 38th Annual White Marlin Open. If you haven't heard of it, it's the World's Largest Billfish Tournament, having one of the highest payouts for any fishing tournament. Professional fishermen and novices come from all over the world just to fish this one week, all after the same thing - the largest prize (money$$) winning fish. This year, 237 boats have registered for the tournament, with a total estimated payout of $2,138,000. Yep... that's over 2 million dollars that will be awarded this year. Money and values fluctuate through the week, it's all based on registered Calcutta, high point leaders and winning fish. In the past, the largest White doesn't even walk with the most money... needless to say, a lot of math goes into calculating the exact dollar amount - and I'd hope so when over $2 Million is at stake.

People far and wide head over to Harbour Island, on 14th street bayside to check out the weigh-ins. I'm talking a couple thousand people will walk through this small community just to check out the action, it's a pretty cool sight. Today, 144 boats went out. As far as I know, nothing has been weighed in yet. Typically weigh-ins begin around 4 pm and go until 9 pm. These times also can vary, depending on the size of the fish, urgency to get in... or if you're still fighting a fish on a line.

It's a pretty exciting week, we saw some large fish the last few year and hopefully we'll see the same this year. The last two years brought in some very large Blue Marlin's, over a thousand lbs. I can't wait to see what will be brought in this year, it should be an exciting week!

Considering it has completely captivated the nation, I am sure you are aware that it's Discovery Channel's Shark week. Amazingly, according to the International Shark Attack Files, Ocean City has never had a Shark Attack. Feel free to dip your little piggies in our beach - our sharks are Friends, not foes... lovers, not fighters.

Last year I brought this same subject up, considering that some particularly large sharks were discovered in Maryland waterways (Sharks in OC ... I think not).

Since everyone's pretty much in the Shark mood... and why wouldn't America be? Shark Week is incredibly interesting... and terrifying all at the same time.

Last week of July - Dew Tour Recap

For months I've been so excited about July and the Dew Tour coming to OC... but now that it's passed, I've sadly realized that July is almost over! I know, I know... we still have '2' great months ahead - August and September. But my 1/2 of summer has so quickly flown by, and although it's been great, it's a little sad that we are 1/2 way through. Time really flies when your having fun!

Excitingly, Ocean City must have really been having fun this past weekend. A record 73,000 fans attended this weekend's competitions - the largest crowd in Dew Tour history! Ocean City itself was packed, more than 320,000 people were in town. On Sunday, the finals night, crowds were out cheering on their favorites. It felt like the majority of the crowd was out to support our own Maryland native, Bucky Lasek who won the Skateboard Vert. After winning, Bucky is qouted "Words can’t explain how I feel right now. I went all last year without a win. To come back this year to win the first stop, the Pantech Open, in my homestate of Maryland, is unbelievable." I'll have to agree, a great performance and I'm very proud of our local Marylander.

There's already talk of the Dew Tour coming back next year... *fingers crossed* Can't wait!

So.... the Blog got a little makeover... rather Major-Make-Over-Overhaul! And I couldn't be more thrilled, the designer did an excellent job!

In addition to the new 'Ocean City - under the sea look' the blog now has labels! These should make it easier to find certain types of blog posts. If your interested in recipes check out 'Fish Food' For those interested in anything Ocean City related visit 'Sandy Sights.' Wanna find out a little more info on the hot spots in town? Commotion Down the Ocean

Next Wednesday, July 20th, the Nations oldest operating Skate Park, The Ocean Bowl, will be hosting Commotion Down the Ocean to kick off the 4 day Dew Tour coming next weekend. The event has been organized by a Florida group, the Grind For Life, who holds events to raise money for cancer patients and their families.

This winter the park was updated with a new pool and vert ramp, it couldn't be a better time for such a great event. The day will being with amateur competitions for both children and adults. There will also be professional demonstrations. Some of the Dew Tour athletes will be stopping by later in the day for meet and greets and to sign autographs. The area surrounding the Ocean Bowl will be made into a vendor village, with food, business vendor tents and live music. There will also be plenty of giveaways throughout the day.

A great cause, and a fun day - this will be an event not to be missed. Don't forget to stop by 3rd street and the Bay on Wednesday, July 20th from 2 - 9pm.

Dew Tour Breaks Ground

Set up for the Dew Tour began this past Monday. To keep the preparations from affecting traffic and tourists, equipment has been brought into the inlet after midnight and into the early morning hours. Actual construction of the venue will be during the day up until Thursday, July 21st, when the Dew Tour kicks off!

This morning The Dew Tour tweeted that they had their groundbreaking ceremony, I guess they are ready to sink the bowl into the sand! Can't wait to check out the progress as it goes. I'll keep you updated!

Dew Tour Update.... Kid Cudi, The Cool Kids & The Deans List

I'm sure most of you have already heard... but the Dew Tour has finally announced our headlining performer for Saturday, July 23rd concert.... Drumroll please.... Kid Cudi will be playing in Ocean City. The concert will be on the beach at the inlet along with Festival Villiage, which is FREE! Concert begins at 7:30 pm and goes until 11:30 pm.... or maybe longer?? Fingers crossed!

Kid Cudi's known for modern hiphop, and has sold over 4.6 million singles to date. In 2009 he debuted his first album and the first single "Day 'n' Nite" which reached the top 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. He released his second album last spring, Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager.

Opening for Kid Cudi will the The Cool Kids. Excitingly, their new album is being released today and features guest appearances from some major artists. A newer band, The Dean's List will be opening for the Cool Kids. The Dean's List has been a popular group in colleges around the country, their large fan base is the primary reason they were chosen by Whooznxt.com

Go Barefoot - Bay to Beach Clean Up

In the past few years I've become a fan of Barefoot Wine & Bubbly. Not only are their wines affordable and pretty tasty - but they have a great community outreach and social program. I really love what they've been doing, between coastal cleanups, blogging, and allowing fans to create their own Barefoot profile and share recipes and info with other Barefoot fans.... I'd say there doing some pretty great things.

It should come as no surprise that I'm excited to announce that our local Maryland Coastal Bays Program has joined forces with Barefoot Wine & Bubbly for a Bay to Beach Coastal Clean Up! I can't think of anything better - helping clean up our much loved waterways and delicious wine!

The clean up is this Sunday, July 17th from 2 - 4 pm. Anyone interested in volunteers can meet in front of the Gazebo on 3rd Street in OC to get your 'area-assignments' for the clean up. Afterwards all volunteers are invited to Conner's Beach Cafe on the boardwalk (between 2nd and 3rd) for a Free After Party featuring Barefoot Wine! (for those 21 and older of course...)

I'll Race Ya.... In a Bathtub!

To many's dismay, the annual Berlin Village Fair was canceled this year, but luckily it's most popular event has been given the chance to thrive!

And tonight's the night... that's right, today Berlin will host their annual Bathrub Races! The Famous event will take place during tonight's 2nd Friday Art Stroll from 5 - 8pm.

For years local businesses and residents have taken part in the event. Winner is entitled to a year of bragging rights and the Bath Tub Races Trophy. Winners also win a free banner on the Berlin Chamber's site.

Great event for all, participants and spectators alike. If your interested in racing, don't forget to register!

Watermelon Lime Jello

Today I came across this amazing post for Watermelon Lime Jello on 'The Sweet Tooth' blog ... and nothing screams summer to me more than watermelon!

I had to share, they are just too cute! They look like the serious party hit, and I bet they are great with the Chocolate Chips that she added! I can't help but think this would go great with whipped cream, perhaps the new chocolate vodka infused whip I recently found at the store. Maybe these could replace the chocolate chips?

They look like they might take some serious preparation, but anything this cute and summery is worth it!

Her recipe makes up to 40 little watermelon shots, plenty for a good sized crowd. I wonder what fabulous drink she made out of the left over lime juice?

Making the Most of Easy Crowds

Well, we flew through the 4th, I still can't believe fireworks and bbq's are over! July 4th is easily, our busiest weekend year after year... I guess for many the beach is synonymous with Independence Day celebrations. This year we were packed... record numbers packed! It's estimated that 354,106 people were in town! The population number is based on the hotels, rentals and traffic reports... but I am willing to bet the actually number is higher, I know I had plenty of out-of-town guests packing into my tight accommodations!

Despite the crowds, the weekend went off without a hitch! And for one of the first times in a long time, the beach didn't seem all that packed this year. We found a nice little spot... with plenty of empty beach space to surround us (I like a privacy bubble at the beach...) No one even tried to invade our spot... and it seemed that all our neighbors were very respectful of keeping our beach clean! Despite the tight parking, the crowds weren't so bad this year.

With all the heat and humidity in the air, mother nature let down a little rain. The night turned out to be a perfect temperature, and no clouds.... needless to say, the fireworks were AMAZING! The past few years they've been a little hazy with all the humidity in the air, the rain was just what the Doctor (or Mayor Meehan) ordered! Beautiful weekend with easy crowds and Beautiful Fireworks!

Summer's flying by... it's already July 4th weekend! For those not familiar with Ocean City this weekend... will be packed. Plan on parking your car and keeping it there, because technically you're lucky if you can find a spot. Buss passes are $3 to ride all day, and just $1 for a single way.

Ocean City will set off fireworks in 2 spots, Beach downtown and Bay uptown at Northside park. In addition, Seacrets will set off their own from the bay at 49th St. Fireworks are expected to start around 9:30 pm

Downtown, The United States Army Downrange Band will play at North Division Street and the beach. The free concert will begin around 8 pm. Plan to get there early for a good spot, but luckily fireworks can be seen from just about anywhere on the boardwalk.

Uptown, Groove Train will perform at Northside Park starting at 8pm, followed by fireworks over the bay.

Dew Tour Athletes Confirmed!

The Dew Tour released their official list of confirmed athletes competing in Ocean City this July. Some of the biggest names in skate and BMX will be headed our way for the Skate and BMX Vert, BMX Park and the Skate Bowl contest!

We'll have returning champ, Shaun White, Andy Macdonald, Bucky Lasek, Zach Miller, Brett Banasiewicz, Garrett Reynolds, Jamie Bestwick, Chad Kagy... just to name a few!

Buy Local Challange

I always attempt to buy local and eat organic produce, it should come as no surprise that I've joined the Maryland Buy Local Challenge! This past spring and recent summer many of my fellow locals have been inspired to take the challenge, such as fellow blogger Good Clean Fun Life. The past few month's they've been busy buying and eating local, most recently they have been able to purchase all of their produce from local growers!

If you weren't aware, buying and eating local has tons of advantages! It's great for your local economy, much better for the environment, and local foods tend to be healthier for you (they are given the ability to fully ripen, which means more of vitamins and nutrients!) Although many are attempting for the full summer, Maryland's taken up a week long challenge for this July, from the 23rd - 31st.

Free Concert, Art, Food and Drinks

Yep, that's right - it's a busy little Thursday at the beach.

Today marks Smitty McGee's 22nd Anniversary, and to celebrate their throwing a bash All Day... and All Night. Live music and entertainment, plus some great party specials. Domestic Drafts will be just $1.75!

The Ocean City Fishing Center will be hosting their Thursday night 'Art on the Docks' from 4 - 7 today. Stop by to check out local artists wares - maybe even pick up a few things for yourself. Everything there is one of a kind! While there enjoy a snack or drink for their dock bar and restaurant, Micky Fins. The event has a very unique atmosphere, being outside surrounded by beautiful fishing boats - a beautiful location on the water.

Finally, the Bonedaddy's will be performing a Free concert on the green at Lighthouse Sound tonight. They'll be offering a BBQ grill outside, plus happy hour pricing and drink specials. All proceeds go towards a great local cause, Diakonia. Bring a chair and blanket and enjoy some great music while sitting on one of the most beautiful courses on the Eastern Shore. They'll also have family fun activities, things for the kiddies and putting contests!

Although Summer's been in full swing in Ocean City for about a month now, today is the Summer Solstice, the official start of summer. We couldn't ask for a better day - not too hot with a cool breeze and sunny. Perfect for the longest day of the year, the sun won't set until 8:27 pm tonight. Can't wait to head outside and enjoy the day with a little happy hour.

In honor of the Summer Solstice, here's a refreshing summer drink courtesy of à la carte kitchen

Raspberry Mojito

Makes 1 serving
8 fresh mint leaves
1/2 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice
1 teaspoon superfine sugar
2 ounces white rum
2-3 ounces seltzer
4-6 fresh raspberries
- Place mint leaves, lime juice and sugar in a highball glass (something tall and narrow is perfect). Using the straight end of a wooden spoon, gently press on leaves to release flavor (“muddle” is the official term).
- Fill glass with ice cubes. Pour in rum. Top off with seltzer. Drop in raspberries, and sip!

Aerial Tram? I hope Not!

Yesterday, the Baltimore Sun released an article that Ocean City is considering building an aerial tram above the boardwalk that would stretch from the inlet to 27th street. The tram would be around 50 feet above, with two open air terminals. It would run during peak tourist season - April to October from 8 am to 10 pm.

I can't vouch for the truth of this claim, except for the fact that it was in a reputable newspaper - but I am SHOCKED that Ocean City would even spend time considering this proposal. Given the recent public outcry over possible changes to our historical boardwalk (which were turned down due to the predominantly negative reaction) - I can't imagine that town officials would waste valuable time discussing something that would not just change, but ruin our beloved boardwalk.

The glory of our boardwalk is that it is open to the elements; open to the shinning sun and cool night breezes. A tram structure above would destroy the open air feeling. I have a hard timing seeing how people wouldn't feel claustrophobic having something hovering above them. Even if it functioned as a 'gondola' it will still require numerous posts and wires suspended above - I'm sure the Sea Gulls will be overjoyed at having a place to sit while they excrete on all below.

The beauty of Ocean City and our boardwalk is the experience, and sharing that experience year after year with your family. The boardwalk isn't just famous for it's 'structure,' it's know for the amazing treats you enjoy while walking it. Thrasher's, Dumser's, Candy Kitchen, Wockenfuss, arcade games - these are what makes us famous. Children and adults alike get excited for what a boardwalk visit entails - ice cream, cotton candy, funnel cake, chocolate covered strawberries. An aerial tram would completely bypass these, destroying everything that our visitors have come to know and love about our town.

We've had our standard boardwalk Tram for years - It's there for the few that feel that the walk may be too much to bare, but most happily choose to walk to their destination. I will admit it can be slightly annoying on busy days, but it's what we have - and it works! Yes, from time to time people have to move out of the Tram's way, perhaps it take a minute out of your stroll to move aside, but that isn't a reason to build a multi-million dollar sky ship. The Tram works, you can ride it up and down the boardwalk, and stop where you'd prefer, there's just no reason to change this.

If this is seriously considered, I would hope it would go to a public poll. I'm sure hotels will vote against it, I can't imagine how this could improve an Oceanfront Room's view. I just hope others will see the detrimental affects this could have on our beloved boardwalk and tell the town NO. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the matter.

Open Call for America's Next Top Model - Will it be you?

This summer Seacret's will be hosting an open casting call for the Nationally televised show 'America's Next Top Model.' The open call will take place on Monday, June 27th, from 5-9pm. Registration begins at 4pm. In order to be seen, you must pre-register! Once pre-registered you'll have access to the full registration packet which MUST be brought with you to Seacrets. All applicants must be 18 - 27 years of age, and at at least 5'7."

All entrants must bring 3 labeled photos: 1 close up, 1 clothed full length body, 1 swimsuit. Please bring a copy of 2 legal forms of ID - and Don't Forget Your Registration Packet!

Sand Playdough

Here's a fun kid activity that can be enjoyed anywhere! If you don't live near the beach - sand can be found at most hardware and craft stores, typically it's very inexpensive.

Ingredients:
4 cups clean sand
3 cups flour
1 cup water
1/4 cup oil

Directions:
Combine all ingredients together in a bowl. Knead until you can form it into a ball. Add more water if it is too dry - more flour if it's too wet.

Kid's will have hours of enjoyment with this - what kid doesn't love playdough? Plus it's a great beachy way to get in the summer mood.

Restaurant Week - Courses for $10

If you haven't had a chance to enjoy the fabulous deals of Restaurant Week, you'd better hurry because it's over this week (just today, Wed., Thur. and Sun. night left!) Various Restaurant's around town will offer 2 courses for $20 or 3 for $30. I personally prefer the 2 courses; 3 courses always winds up to be way too much (plus $30 per person isn't that much of a dinner steal!)

This week I had the pleasure of dining at Micky Fins, in West OC at the Ocean City Fishing Center. A great spot on the marina, the cool bay breezes blow right through. Micky's offers indoor and outdoor sitting, plus a fabulous casual outdoor bar with happy hour everyday from 3 - 6. They typically have live music playing, and you're guaranteed to be surrounded by a nice crowd. Plus, it's always great food - locals wouldn't go there otherwise.

For Restaurant week, Micky Fin's is offering the the 2 courses for $20. Our dinner wound up to be the perfect portion for all. Enjoy an app (salad or soup choice) and a main course, there were about 6 different entrees listed to choose from. Entrees included fresh fish, steak, and crab cakes. We dined like kings, and at $20 a person - I'd say it's a pretty great deal.

Free Beach Movies!

Bring the family to the beach at night for a Free showing on Ocean City's 16 foot projector. Each movie is family friendly, don't forget to bring your own beach chair and blanket. Movies begin at 8:30 pm

Monday & Friday, movies will be shown on 27th street beach. Get there early for family fun and games starting at 7:30 pm. (June 27 - August 12)

Wednesday's free movie will be shown in front of the Carousel on 118th St. (June 15 - August 24)

OC's Hot Hot Hot - Air & Car Show

As posted yesterday, Ocean City's HOT, but this weekend we'll be much more than temperature hot - We've got jets and muscle cars galore!

The power in West Ocean City, finally went back on last night... but we're still waiting for that Thunderstorm. Weather man predicted some dark clouds, but it looks like the first batch already came through with just a little spitting.

This Saturday and Sunday head to the beach between 8th - 20th for prime Air Show seating. You can expect Antique planes, Jumbo Jets and parachuted fly ins. The Air Show will run from noon - three each day.

The Car show will be at the Convention Center from 10 - 6 each day. Plus you'll see them all through town.

To sweeten the week up, Ocean City is still offering our famous Restaurant Week. Local establishments will be offering amazing 3 course meals for $30 and 2 course meals for $20.

I'l never complain about heat...

First off - this is not a complaint what so ever... but it is HOT out. This is in no way a complaint, I'll take this heat over 2 foot snow drifts anyday!

Seriously though... I don't mean just warm, it is HOT! So hot that Ocean City experienced a 'minor' power outage today in West OC. I heard through the greatvine that a transformer in West OC blew first. The grid attempted to compensate...but no can do. There's been some speculation that it's due to the tremendous amount of energy being used to keep everyone's house a nice cool 70 degrees. Which completely makes sense. Just being in the office for a few hours without power the temperature grew at least 10 degrees warmer. Hopefully we'll be back up and running by tomorrow, otherwise everyone's going to have a nice sweaty night.

The heat does feel extremely sticky - humid, as though there's a heavy cloud of moisture floating around. I'm sure we'll get a nice storm one of these days (I wouldn't be surprised if it were tonight). Typically June is known for thunderstorms - the type that the sky just opens and a downfall of rain comes down so strong that you can't see you hands clearly. I love how they only last about 30 minutes, then the sun's back out and it's at least 10 degrees cooler. That would be my favorite type of storm, dangerous but at least it doesn't keep you up all night.

This weekend is the air show, I can already hear some the jets flying through. Tomorrow will be their practice, which is actually my favorite day to watch them... the crowd is much more manageable. I wonder if fellow Ocean City blogger, Big Meaty will have a post this week's... last year's was rather... interesting to say the least.

Surf Swap at Fager's

Don't miss this weekends big event, the Surf Swap! This Sunday (June 5) from noon - 6 stop by Fager's Island on 60th St. and the Bay. The event is free and open to all, featuring vendors from local surf shops. Plus you'll be able to buy, trade or sell boards, kayaks and paddleboards.

In addition to the Surf Swap, local businesses SuperFun Eco Tours Kayak Outfitters and What SUP Paddle Board Outfitters will be hosting kayak and paddle board races. Equipment will be provided for all who wish to race, however you may bring your own. Registration for the races is from Noon - 2, and is a $20 donation to the Maryland Coastal Bays Program (a wonderful cause for our local waterways!!). Race entries include food and Summer Session Beer from Evolution Craft Brewery (gotta support our local brewers!).

Races are open to everyone (under 21 must have an adult present though). Teams of two can enter the races, so bring a friend along! The Paddleboard race starts at 2pm and the Kayak race starts at 3pm. If your not down with getting wet, it'll be a great even to watch - don't be late! Entertainment will be provided by Chester River Runoff - an Eastern Shore bluegrass band.

Plus there will be some great prizes handed out for the winners of the races. First prize for paddleboard and kayak events will be a brewery tour and tasting at Evo for six people.

Cash prizes will be available for second and third places. If you plan to compete, be there at noon for registration!

It's here... Memorial Day Weekend

It's been awhile since I've posted, clearly the world didn't end and there was no pirates vs. zombies for me!

Not only does the world still turn - but Summer's here and it's Memorial Day Weekend (if you couldn't judge by the steady stream of traffic packed bumper to bumper on Rt. 50). I honestly can't believe how quickly the winter has flown, I hope the summer seems a tad bit longer - I need to soak up some major rays in the next 4 months.

This weekend will be a great one for the town, weatherman has predicted a warm and sunny few days ahead. I'm ready for sand beneath my toes and a crush in hand. Hopefully, it's one for the books.

I don't have any true 'updates' for things to do this weekend... because everywhere will be popping. If you're down for crowds, you can't go wrong visiting Seacrets on 49th street and the bay. They'll have the rafts in the bay, plus bay/beach waitresses so you never have to get up. I highly recommend getting there early to lay claim on your 'spot.' Just as a word of advice, if you notice that your fellow rafters haven't left their raft all day AND are still drinking.... watch-out for the warm yellow stream that's sure to surround them.

If your looking for something a tad more relaxing, try Coconuts at the Castle in the Sand. Although I'm sure they'll be busy, they tend to be 'less party' and 'more relax' if you catch my drift. You can enjoy their pool, outdoor patio, play volleyball or let their staff wait on your while you and your crew sit by the ocean.

Finally, if your looking for something without anyone around....good luck! Just kidding! It will be a busy weekend, but you can always escape to nearby Assateague Island. The island offers two parks, State and National. For those looking for complete desertion, I'd recommend the National Park. With a small 'donation/fee' you'll receive a week pass, for all those 4-wheel truck drivers if your willing to let a little air out of the tires the park will allow you onto the beach. You can park and set up your own private beach spot for the day. Just be sure to bring everything you need!

Judgement Day? I'd prefer a Crush....

Apparently the beginning of the end of the world starts tomorrow... and if there's nothing I can do about it I might as well enjoy the last day of sun with a delicious orange crush in hand.

Earthquakes are to ravage the world, floods, fire... hell even zombies are to rise and walk amongst us. I guess we can finally put all those zombie flicks to good use - please remember to ALWAYS buckle your seat belt and of course NEVER forget the 'double tap.'

Unfortunately, the entire Delmarva area is right at sea level - flooding seems inevitable. Luckily, over the years I've had some good practice, last year water levels rose a few feet above ground. I've invested in a great pair of pink galoshes... be jealous, very jealous. I'll have to watch out for envious Zombies though.

If we're flooded, I'm guessing that we're safe from the fires. All the local surfers will definitely enjoy the Earthquakes - with the high waters, can you imagine the waves they'll produce? Thank our lucky stars that we are no where near nuclear power plant.

It's a nice little addition that we're so close to the ocean. I'm sure I can find a boat to chill out on while the water levels rise. Hopefully one with a fully stocked kitchen and bar - an orange juicer wouldn't be bad to have aboard either, certainly helpful in making my orange crushes.

Since many will be attempting to flee from the floods, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I can secure myself the local pirate ship. It's a well known fact that Zombies are horrified by Pirates - they are really the only thing that can beat a Zombie due to their amazing ability to appear alive while actually being dead. Plus, pirate parties always rock! What Zombie would mess with a great looking pirate?

I think I've gotten all my bases covered for tomorrow, maybe I'll need some sunscreen. The weatherman say's it'll be 75 and sunny for the weekend.... I guess he didn't get the memo.

It's the End of the World As We Know It

They're Here..... Spring Cruisin'

If you weren't kept up all night by the rumble of engines and the smell of burning rubber from the burnouts at every light... you'd have no idea that it's the 21st Annual Spring Cruisin' Weekend!

Although loud, and a bit smelly... and definitely some slow moving traffic... this weekend is pretty cool. Just take a look around - there's more than 3,000 Hot Rods, Classics and Custom cars driving through Ocean City. I'm pretty sure it's the only type of weekend that draws more of a crowd along side the street than the beach. The masses will gather along side Baltimore Ave and Coastal with their beach chairs and coolers... just to watch these cars drive by (maybe I should finally wash that pollen off my car...?).

Friday and Saturday there will be a boardwalk parade, starting at 27th and headed into the inlet. Get up early for a good spot, the parade starts at 8am. Main shows will be at the Convention Center on 45th St. & Bay and at the Inlet on Friday & Saturday from 9 am - 5pm and Sunday from 10am - 4pm. Additional shows will be occurring all over town at various businesses.

This year our Crusin' Celebrity is Danielle from the History Chanel's American Pickers. She'll be at the events on Saturday from 11 am - 4 pm and Sunday from 10 am - 1 pm to sign autographs, pose for pics and answer any questions you may have. The Batmobile Show car will also be on display this year at the Convention Center.

Friday, May 20 the Ocean City Factory Outlets will host a Classic Cruisin' car show from 9 am - noon. The packing lot will be packed and additional events are scheduled through the day.

On Saturday, May 21 Berlin will host their annual Spring Car show and parade. A couple hundred cars will come out for this event, and the streets will be closed so crowds can walk and check out the cars. Events will be held from 9am - 4pm.

Also on Saturday, the Steer Inn Tavern will be hosting their 3rd Rods & Rockers show. This vintage car and bike show is open to anything pre-1975! Events start at 1 pm and the party will go through the night. They'll have some great rockabilly style bands plus a Pin-up girl contest! If your in the Classic Cruisin' spirit you can't go wrong with this event!

Saturday Night the Cruisin' Legends Show and Dance will be going on at the Convention Center Ballroom, starting at 8pm. Look forward to Sir Rod, Johnny Seaton's 'Elvis', The Blues Brother Revue and special guest Gene Vincentt & the Cadillac Cruisers.

Dew Tour Update

Well, we're just a few months away now (seriously counting down the days until July 21st).

The Dew Tour still hasn't announced the Concert performers, but their website says we should expect this sometime this month.... I'm dying to find out more on the Festival Village and Concert.

Bret Michaels Sunfest Performance Rescheduled

Sad news for all of you looking forward to Bret's Sunfest appearance this fall... but don't get your panties in a bunch quite yet! He's personally called town officials and worked out a way to reschedule - he'll be here next year, September 22, 2012.

Apparently Bret's been double booked - and will actually be on tour in Australia this September. According to the press announcement released this morning, Bret personally called Ocean City Town Official Mike Jones to apologize and find a way to make this event work.

To fans, Bret stated " I want to thank everyone for their understanding and I'm excited to make up this date next year and bring the biggest party that Ocean City, MD has ever seen in 2012. Get ready for next year, Ocean City is going to rock!"

Sounds like next fall should be a fun time! All tickets previously bought will be honored in 2012 - so keep your tickets! If for any reason you are unable to make it, and in need of a refund, contact the Ticketmaster office you purchased your tickets from.
